Flyers trade rumors: Ben Bishop, our newest goaltender?

The Flyers are interested in goaltender Ben Bishop. Could he be traded to Philadelphia?

Bruce Bennett

Update: Bishop's been traded to Tampa Bay, according to TSN.

Ottawa Senators goaltender Ben Bishop is on the trade market this deadline day, and the Flyers reportedly have interest. That's the report from Bruce Garrioch and Pierre LeBrun.

The Sens acquired Bishop at the deadline a year ago from the St. Louis Blues. Bishop was an AHL goalie at the time of the trade, but the Sens picked him up to replace the injured Craig Anderson. He wound up playing 10 games for Ottawa and compiled a 2.48 GAA and a .909 save percentage in those games. He's a young enough guy -- age 26 -- with a lot of potential as a solid NHL goaltender, but he'll need the opportunity to flourish in order to fill that potential.

This season, he played for Binghamton during the lockout and has served mostly as Anderson's backup in Ottawa since the lockout's end. Anderson is hurt again so that complicates matters a bit, and Ottawa will only trade him on their terms. Here's what SB Nation's Senators blog, Silver Seven, has to say on that subject:

It's unclear what type of player the Senators are looking for, but they're in need of defensive help (although Jared Cowen would be pretty good in that regard) and could probably use a proven second-line player.

The benefit, of course, is that the Senators are in the driver's seat here: Bishop is set to become a restricted free agent, so there's no rush for Murray at the moment. He can afford to wait until the off-season or draft day or even later than that, if need be.

Judging from reports and Silver Seven's analysis, I'd expect the Sens to demand something like a pick and Matt Read for Bishop. My biggest issue with that? With Ilya Bryzgalov here, what's Bishop's worth to the Flyers? Could he have an opportunity to play here? Would acquiring Bishop mean the Flyers are preparing to dump Bryzgalov via an amnesty buyout or otherwise?

Lots of questions. What do you think about a potential deal for Ben Bishop?
