Philadelphia Flyers rumors: Team reportedly interested in goalie Michal Neuvirth

He's been a backup most of his career but might be out looking for a chance to be a starter in free agency.

Well, this is intriguing.

Michal Neuvirth would be an excellent backup option behind Steve Mason. Probably the best on the market, if he's indeed interested in being a backup. That's the biggest question, though: he left the New York Islanders in search of starting goalie money, and ... well, he's not going to get that in Philadelphia. He might not get it anywhere, as there doesn't seem to be a good starting option available for him in the league right now.

Here's what Lighthouse Hockey, an Islanders blog, said about him in a post just yesterday:

In a weird way, Neuvirth's free agent status hurt him, as it meant his competitors for jobs were all available and on the move last week, while Neuvirth had to wait for the July 1 free agency opening. Once there, he'll be in a pool of names that also includes Thomas Greiss and Karri Ramo, as well as several other recognizable if not promising names.

While it's true the names that moved last week don't have the track record [Jaroslav] Halak has, so in theory they'd be more liable to lose their gig to a second acquisition like, say, Neuvirth, the teams they joined all already have a second goalie on an NHL contract.

Neuvirth has a career .912 save percentage. He made $2.5 million against the salary cap last year.
