Luke Schenn and Vincent Lecavalier traded to Los Angeles Kings

Ron Hextall has done it again.

Vincent Lecavalier and Luke Schenn are gone, traded tonight to the Los Angeles Kings in exchange for a third round pick 23 year old center Jordan Weal. The Flyers have confirmed the trade.

Weal is a throw in -- he's played just 10 NHL games, all this season with the Kings, after spending the last three years in the AHL.

Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet first reported the deal. He reports that the Flyers will retain 50 percent of BOTH salaries. Schenn earns $3.6 million against the cap, which means the Flyers will save $1.8 million against the cap on his deal. That expires after this season, so it's not that big of a deal. Vinny's deal hits the cap at $4.5 million per year and expires after 2018, so the Flyers will save $2.25 million against the cap over those next two years. That's better than a buyout.

In this scenario, they clear $2.25 mil of cap space per year versus just keeping him, and in two years, it's gone. Buyouts last longer.

This is a great deal for Ron Hextall. The Flyers get rid of their worst contract in Lecavalier, and in Schenn they lose a player that they probably wouldn't have re-signed after the season anyway. And they gain $4.05 million in cap space immediately.

Even better: if this report from RDS is true, the Flyers will could Vinny's cap hit following the current season.

Vincent Lecavalier will play for the #kings for the rest of the season and intend to retire at the end of it. Last season in the NHL.
