It’s been just over five months since the Flyers’ 2015-16 season came to an end on April 24 with a 1-0 loss to the Washington Capitals in Game 6 of the first round of the playoffs. Tonight, they’ll play their first official contest (contests, even!) of the 2016-17 season, as the training camp team will take part in a split-squad evening of hockey across the greater New York/New Jersey area.
20 members of the Flyers’ camp roster will be playing in Newark against the Devils, while another 20 will be in Brooklyn to take on the Islanders.
Neither of these games will be on television, but you will be able to watch the Flyers-Islanders game live on the Flyers’ website beginning at 7:00 p.m. As for the Flyers-Devils game, that is not being filmed anywhere, but you’ll be able to listen to a radio broadcast of it on 97.5 The Fanatic, also at 7:00 p.m.
As for the lineups, you’re mostly going to be watching younger prospects and expected AHLers, as most of last season’s NHL team will be taking the night off. Only five players who were mainstays on the Flyers’ roster last year — Scott Laughton, Brandon Manning, Jordan Weal, Nick Cousins, and Michael Del Zotto — will be in action tonight.
But, of course, that DOES mean that we’ll be getting our first live glimpse at a number of exciting prospects. Ivan Provorov and Travis Konecny’s bids to make the NHL roster begin in earnest tonight, while several members of the 2016 draft class will don the orange and black in an official game for the first time in their careers.
Use this thread to discuss tonight’s games as you please. It’s good to have hockey back.
