Why I’m a fan of the Flyers: ‘I’m gonna be sincere for once in my life’

Welcome to the refreshed Broad Street Hockey! To celebrate the new look and feel of our sports communities, we’re sharing stories of how and why we became fans of our favorite teams. If you’d like to do the same, head over to the FanPosts to begin. Each FanPost will be entered into a drawing to win a $500 Fanatics gift card [contest rules]. We’re collecting all of the stories here and featuring the best ones from around our network. Come Fan With Us!

I’m a fan of the Philadelphia Flyers because I love big cold boys, and it just so happens that the Flyers are the closest group of big cold boys that I am aware of. (That being said, if you know of any better big cold boys, please let me know, I will not hesitate to drop these losers like a hot potato.)

I write for Broad Street Hockey for two reasons. First, writing is a great way to get attention, and I love attention, so writing for BSH just seemed to make sense. For my attention grabbing nature. Second, I think that writing for this site is a lot more emotionally and mentally productive than writing poetry about Claude Giroux, which I still sometimes do on occasion. Who among us, right?

Actually, you know what? I’m gonna be sincere for once in my life: I write for BSH because making goofs about the Flyers is one of my favorite things to do in this horrid hellscape we call the human experience. When people read aforementioned goofs and tell me that I made their day, I made them laugh, or they like reading what I write, I get an overwhelming and absolute sense of personal fulfillment that is unattainable for me most anywhere else.

I wouldn’t have nearly as much fun writing about hockey were it not for the people who take the time to read, listen, comment on, and share our work. I’m extremely thankful for the community that supports both the Flyers and the BSH teams: a community that never quiets their compliments or criticisms (offered whenever they see fit, god damn it), a community that constantly demands the best, a community that welcomes all, no matter what we may or may not have in common. Penguins fans may wanna keep their heads up, though.
