Happy Thanksgiving, to all of you who are celebrating! I bet we all thought that after that rough loss last night that we’d be able to have a quiet Thursday, eat an ungodly amount of food, and forget about the Flyers for a day. But they had other plans.
It’s a holiday news dump! The Flyers just announced that they’ve recalled Tyrell Goulbourne and loaned Nicolas Aube-Kubel to the Lehigh Valley Phantoms. This may not be much of a surprise—with Aube-Kubel pulled out of the lineup in Buffalo and it not looking like that was going to change going forward (Dave Hakstol loves him some Jori Lehtera too much to keep him out of the lineup for too long), it makes sense that Hextall would opt to send him down so that he can keep playing (and actually do so for more than five minutes a night). The Phantoms are back in action at home on Friday, so he’ll be looking to make his return then.
And as for the Flyers, we could be reasonably confident that this doesn’t signal much of a change. Could they decide they want to get Goulbourne in the lineup for a bit of extra energy—which, to be fair, they have been lacking at times? Sure. It’s not out of the question. But considering he couldn’t crack the lineup on his first recall of the season, we might not hold our breath on that one.
Is this the move we were expecting? Does it move the needle a whole lot, figure to help pull them out of the skid they’re in? Maybe not. Something’s got to give—how many times have we already said that so far this season—and it’s going to take more than a flip of the AHL call-ups to make that happen.
