Well we were all anticipating a big news drop to be upon us, but this wasn’t what we had in mind. In a surprising twist to the current episode of “what is actually going on with the Flyers?” they have recalled goaltender Carter Hart and subsequently loaned Alex Lyon to the Lehigh Valley Phantoms of the AHL. Anthony Stolarz, who was injured whilst playing in his ninth straight game Saturday night, has been placed on injured reserve and is expected to miss two to four weeks.
Hart, 20, is in the midst of his first professional season, playing in 17 games with the Lehigh Valley Phantoms and going 9-5-2 in his time. His season to date numbers are rather pedestrian, with a .901 save percentage and 3.05 goals against average, but recently he’s gone on a tear.
In Hart’s last five games he has a .939 save percentage and a 1.82 goals against average on his way to posting a 4-1-0 record. He recorded his first professional shutout on December 7th in Lehigh Valley’s 1-0 victory over the Hershey Bears.
This was a roster move made by choice, not by necessity, made clear by Lyon being sent to the Phantoms. If the Flyers wanted to stay the course they had enough healthy bodies to do so. Expect Hart to start his first NHL game in the near future, if not as soon as tomorrow night versus the Detroit Red Wings.
