A sloppy second period combined with a sharp Sergei Bobrovsky looked to be combining for “one of those games” on Thursday night at the Wells Fargo Center, until a goal by captain Claude Giroux and a standout netminding performance by Petr Mrazek (19 saves on 20 shots) willed the Flyers to a come-from-behind victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets.
Giroux scored the game-tying goal 2:34 into the third period and picked up an assist on Nolan Patrick’s game-winner to move his point total up to 72 on the season, good enough for second overall in the NHL. ‘G’ also won 16 of 19 faceoffs on the night.
Shayne Gostisbehere nabbed assists on both goals, giving him 39 on the year, third among all defensemen. Ghost also sits in third in points by blue-liners (49), and second in points-per-game (0.86). Will there be Norris Trophy votes coming Gostisbehere’s way? He is plus-16, after all.
Patrick picked up the winning tally, making a nice backhand play on the power play to slide the puck behind Bobrovsky midway through the third period, just six seconds after Brandon Dubinsky was sent to the box for kneeing (called tripping on the ice) Philly’s captain.
The team is winning, and with the Washington Capitals losing in regulation to the Florida Panthers, they’re within one point of the Metropolitan division lead. Check it out for reaction to the game, as well as nicknaming the fourth line, trade deadline speculation, and a discussion on how to pronounce Oskar Lindblom’s and Petr Mrazek’s names.
