Here we are, friends. With the Flyers closing out the preseason with a win in Boston last night, and heading out to Colorado for some team building this evening, we all but knew that we would be getting the final cuts at some point this afternoon, before their departure. And now it’s happening! We’ve got our first round of cuts for the day.
The Flyers have announced that they’ve assigned defensemen Mark Friedman and Philippe Myers and goaltender Carter Hart to the Phantoms. And these cuts aren’t much of a surprise. With the numbers crunch at defense, Friedman and Myers would have had to really dramatically outplay two or three of our veteran defensemen in order to earn their spot on the team and justify the Flyers sending a vet through waivers, and they just weren’t quite able to do this, as solid as both of their individual camps were. They’ll head down to join the Phantoms and gear up for their season opener this weekend.
It’s a similar sentiment with Hart, and maybe this loan is a good thing. It came down to him and Anthony Stolarz for the backup job, with Alex Lyon and Michal Neuvirth hurt, and with Brian Elliott looking distinctly improved and more settled in his second full game back last night, we had a feeling how this one is going to play out. Elliott is the starter and is looking good, and Hakstol doesn’t like to play the kids brought up to back up, so one of Stolarz or Hart was going to ride the bench until Neuvirth (or Lyon) were ready to return. And we want Hart to play. He needs to be getting reps in, and he’ll be able to get lots of those in Allentown. So… let’s go, the Phantoms?
And that’s about all we’ve got for right now, but we have a feeling we’ll be talking more about cuts soon. Until then.
