The Stanley Cup has been handed out. The Carolina Hurricanes defeated the Vegas Golden Knights in Game 6 by a score of 3-0 to win the series and win the Cup for the first time since 2006. And we know a guy who built that team.
There are incredible stories built into that Hurricanes team: Rod Brind’Amour conquering the NHL and finishing on top, lifting the Cup as both coach and captain in Carolina, and plucky forwards who were cast aside for various reasons coming up to all be dominant forces to win the toughest trophy to win. But for us, nothing comes close to the guy who built the majority of this team and was in charge of keeping them together to be able to have their names engraved forever on Lord Stanley’s Cup.

It has been talked about whenever Tulsky’s journey to becoming the general manager of one of the most consistent teams in the NHL is written about. How he was (and still is, I guess) a genius chemist who worked in that field for several years and earned his PhD in chemistry from Berkeley — all that stuff. But then he fell in love with hockey and started commenting on this little SB Nation website called Broad Street Hockey, a site dedicated to his favorite hockey team, the Philadelphia Flyers.
Commenting turned into fanposting turned into actually writing fully formed articles for the site and over the course of the years, Tulsky would drop some really thought-provoking stuff. Some articles he wrote, such as going over the idea of Balanced Corsi and how certain usage can affect a player’s on-ice shot attempt share numbers, has turned into just general knowledge today and is rooted into most fan’s own analysis. Of course if a player has a higher offensive zone start percentage, it is easier for them to look good when it comes to some underlying numbers, and now we internally adjust for all of that. Tulsky dove into the numbers to prove why that is what we should all eventually do — 15 years ago, that was some cutting edge stuff.
And now, 15 years later from his very first blog, he’s raising the Stanley Cup on the ice with the team that he built with incredibly smart trades, taking thoughtful risks, signing the right free agents, working with his coaching staff to get the most out of every acquisition he made, and just doing what made his team better each and every day.

Unfortunately, this writer was not here during the Tulsky years. This would be such a better article if it was written by Charlie O’Connor, or Travis Hughes, or even the people who are still around that did overlap like Kelly or Kurt. But you’re stuck with me, a current editor, that can just talk glowingly about how much this place means to me and the people who help it still exist today.
Does Tulsky winning the Cup change anything about this current website? Not really. We’re still about to put out a whole lot of articles about who the Flyers might take at the 2026 NHL Draft, and what the upcoming offseason means for them after an unexpected playoff appearance. Status quo over here.
But maybe we’re now more known as one of the small stepping stones for a general manager that eventually went on to win the top prize in this sport that we love so much. Not a whole lot of hockey blogs can say that. It doesn’t make Broad Street Hockey more important than any of them, but just a little unique because some really smart Flyers fan went on to pursue a job in hockey operations and is really good at that job.
I love this place and I’m glad that even though I joined roughly several years after Tulsky was here, that there is just a little bit of a digital footprint of his work still left and it’s because of everyone who reads and subscribes and still hangs out here that we are able to keep this thing alive.
