Claude Giroux to miss tonight’s game in Toronto with upper-body injury, is day-to-day

So here’s some surely unwelcomed news, which may or may not be unexpected: Flyers center and captain Claude Giroux will miss Saturday night’s game in Toronto with what the team is calling an “upper-body injury”:

Flyers GM Ron Hextall announced that center Claude Giroux will not be in the lineup in tonight’s Flyers-Maple Leafs game at the Air Canada Centre due to an upper-body injury. He is considered day-to-day.

While nothing can be said for certain, the logical conclusion here is that Giroux was injured late in the third period of Friday night’s game against the Montreal Canadiens, when Habs defenseman P.K. Subban came in and threw what appeared to be an elbow at Giroux’s head. (GIF via the good people of Sons of Penn, who have additional angles of the hit)

Giroux, as you can see, went down on the play and briefly headed to the bench before coming back in to the game for the end of the third period and overtime. (Which, um, maybe not the best decision?) Subban, meanwhile, was not penalized for the hit.

Were Giroux to be out with a concussion (not that the team would ever refer to it as such), it’s unknown what his timetable for return would be, other than the “day-to-day” designation the team gave in its statement.

Presumably, Sam Gagner will slot back into the lineup tonight in Toronto in Giroux’s place. How exactly the lines will look without the Flyers’ best player is unknown, but it should go without saying that losing Giroux for even a short period of time would be crippling to this team’s already-thin playoff hopes.
