David Jiricek: From sixth overall to Flyers’ reclamation project

In the days leading up to the 2022 NHL Draft, David Jiricek was in competition with Simon Nemec to be the best defenseman in their class. Scouts raved about his booming shot from the point. He had played two professional seasons before he was drafted, and had many international games under his belt for Czechia. Less than four years later, Jiricek is on his third team, and could be the Flyers\' biggest developmental challenge yet.

Jamie Drysdale\'s comparable situation

The 2022 NHL Draft saw Philadelphia take Cutter Gauthier with the pick before Jiricek. The eventual trade of Gauthier landed them the sixth-overall pick from 2020, Jamie Drysdale, a very similar story of stunted development at a young age. The Flyers, with Brad Shaw\'s help, were able to use Drysdale\'s physical attributes to rebuild his game into what is now a very useful NHL defenseman. The challenge now is to replicate this success without Brad Shaw; Todd Rierden (and Phantoms head coach John Snowden\'s staff) has a real project to work on.

Like Drysdale, Jiricek may have been thrust into the best league in the world before he was ready. While his shot has always been standout, his skating was much-maligned, and an offensive style of play with slower feet can make a player unable to recover from their otherwise harmless mistakes. The Flyers don\'t have a problem with skating issues-- we\'ve seen them do good work on Tyson Foerster and Bobby Brink, each falling in their drafts due to skating concerns. The rest of his physical tools leave little to be desired: he\'s 6-foot-4, right-handed, and has an excellent shot. If they can transform him into just an average skater, his developmental floor immediately becomes much higher.

Jiricek\'s trades of the past

David Jiricek played four NHL games in his first year after the draft, with his fourth coming in an April loss in Philadelphia. He managed to get into 43 NHL games his second year, with decent enough advanced numbers, but that would just about be the end of his time in Columbus. After Jiricek raised some very public concern about his role and usage , the Blue Jackets must have felt their relationship had deteriorated beyond repair. The defenseman, still just 21 years old, was traded to Minnesota for a 2025 first, 2027 second, and 2026 third and fourth round picks. That\'s over half a draft that general manager Bill Guerin felt Jiricek was worth-- just over 15 months ago.

In those 15 months, Jiricek played 31 games for the Minnesota Wild. This season, he has zero points in 25 games in the NHL. Again, he spent the majority of games in the American Hockey League with the Iowa Wild, and his scoring numbers with them are down from what they were with Columbus\'s AHL team, the Cleveland Monsters. Another change of scenery-- and maybe clearer expectations and a legitimate path to NHL minutes-- could unlock Jiricek\'s talent. Guerin, who has a reputation for preferring larger players, traded the 6-foot-4 Jiricek for Bobby Brink just one year after spending half a draft class on the young defender.

Guerin echoes the sentiment that Jiricek just wasn\'t in the cards for the Wild this season, especially not with Quinn Hughes joining the mix. On the other hand, had he played better, Minnesota might have thought differently, but players do need time to build confidence and consistency. Jiricek\'s average ice time fell from 12:07 in the month of December to a measly 10:38 per-game in January. He hasn\'t seen NHL ice in February. Both the Flyers and Wild were dealing from positions of strength, and both players should benefit from their situations.

Jiricek\'s results this season

The Wild clearly tried something new with Jiricek this year. His offensive-zone deployment sunk to a career-low 7.2 percent, and perhaps that had something to do with his lack of scoring. They certainly don\'t need him to run the power play with the acquisition of Quinn Hughes, but Jiricek wasn\'t getting power play time there either. This is a distinct weakness in Philadelphia, and it\'s a path to playing time that wasn\'t available elsewhere behind players like Zach Werenski in Columbus. With Jamie Drysdale coming around, the Flyers can consider Jiricek effectively \"Plan B\" for the man-advantage when it comes time.

Jiricek\'s even-strength expected goals share this year isn\'t anything to write home about, sitting below the break-even line at 43.2 percent. His on-ice shot attempt share is a more encouraging 46 percent. He\'s not getting run out of the arena most nights, but you\'d like to see those numbers look better in the limited role he was in. Jiricek wasn\'t facing top competition every night; he\'s been in a sheltered role at just over 11 minutes of ice per game. He\'ll be given a test in Lehigh Valley -- Danny Briere alluded to a heavy workload for the Phantoms-- and if he passes, we could see Jiricek in Philadelphia before season\'s end.

The number one focus this off-season either way will be to make him a better skater, be it through strength training or mechanical fixes, and the Flyers have proven themselves capable. This is the way to acquiring premium talent without a full-on tank. Trevor Zegras, Owen Tippett, Jamie Drysdale, and now David Jiricek will all have been drafted in the top-ten by other franchises unable to maximize their talents. It would greatly accelerate the rebuild if the Flyers were able to do it again here.
