Flyers’ 3 Stars of the Week: Pair of young defensemen lead the way

Cam York and Jamie Drysdale continue to impress as the Flyers go 2-0-1 on the week.

Another week for the Flyers has come and gone, and it was a pretty good week for the Orange and Black. Across three games this week, the Flyers went 2-0-1, collecting 5 of 6 possible points.

On Tuesday and Thursday, the Flyers went into Montreal and Nashville and came away with two gutsy road victories. On Saturday, the Flyers couldn’t recover from a lackluster start in a 3-2 overtime loss to the Ottawa Senators.

So, without further ado, let’s dive into the three standouts of the week!

3. Travis Konecny

1 goal, 4 assists, 3 games played, 20:10 average TOI

This wasn’t the most flashy of weeks for Travis Konecny, and it still feels like he’s not clicking on all cylinders just yet, but Konecny was the leading scorer for the Flyers this week. Even though his play-driving statistics are slightly down through the first 15 games, Konecny’s still managed to put up 13 points in 15 games – and this week was the closest he’s been to being back to his highest level. According to Natural Stat Trick, the Flyers carried a 50.6% shot attempts for percentage with Konecny on the ice at 5-on-5. That is a major step in the right direction for a player that was previously operating in the 46% range just a few games ago.

In terms of highlights, Konecny’s lone goal of the week was the empty netter to finish off Nashville. He picked up three secondary assists as well, and his primary assist came on Nikita Grebenkin’s game-tying goal in the third period against the Canadiens. Overall, while not the flashiest of highlight reels from Konecny, he was in and around tons of the offense for the Flyers this week.

2. Jamie Drysdale

1 goal, 2 assists, 3 games played, 23:37 average TOI

It’s hard to understate just how important Jamie Drysdale has been so far this season. He’s made the jump, and despite all the angst about Cutter Gauthier, the Flyers will feel just fine about the trade if Drysdale continues to perform like this.

On a night-in, night-out basis, Drysdale’s been one of the Flyers best defensemen from a play-driving standpoint. He’s excelled at leading the breakout, efficiently moving the puck, and the pair with Nick Seeler has performed above expectations to start the year.

This week, Drysdale’s two assists weren’t incredibly flashy, but they were emblematic of what Drysdale has excelled at so far this season. Particularly, Drysdale’s assist on Noah Cates’ game-winner in Nashville was just a smart, shoot-for-a-rebound play from the defenseman.

Then, on Saturday against Ottawa, Drysdale was rewarded for his strong play with the game-tying goal in the third, on a rebound chance in front of the net.

1. Cam York

1 goal, 3 assists, 3 games played, 24:46 average TOI

Even more so than Drysdale, where would the Flyers be without the steadiness of Cam York? Since missing the first few games of the season, York has arguably been the Flyers most valuable defenseman, and this week was no different.

With four points this week, York’s up to 9 points in 12 games. That’s an excellent mark for York, and a 61.5 point pace over 82 games. It would be pretty surprising to see York reach that high mark, but you never know with how he’s playing right now.

York scored a goal and registered an assist in the win over Montreal. On the goal, York took a pass from Trevor Zegras on the power play and one-timed it past the Montreal goaltender. Of all the skills that York has flashed in the first 12 games, his ability to run the point on the power play has been understated.

Then, on Thursday against Nashville, York earned two more assists, including the primary assist on Matvei Michkov’s goal. The patience, strength, and poise that making this pass required from York is really impressive.
