Nothing has been confirmed by the Philadelphia Flyers, but reports have surfaced indicating Jaroslav “Yogi” Švejkovský will be heading to Philadelphia to join Rick Tocchet’s staff as an assistant coach.

Švejkovský, a native of the Czech Republic, was with Tocchet for the 2024-25 season during Tocchet’s tenure with the Canucks. Prior to the assistant coaching position in Vancouver, Švejkovský was the team’s skills coach for the previous two seasons. He also was a skills coach for over a decade in the Western Hockey League for the Vancouver Giants.

At the time when he became the Canucks’ assistant coach, Tocchet praised his “work ethic and willingness to do anything and everything to help us become a better team.” Again, nothing has been announced or confirmed, but it’s expected Švejkovský would help with the Flyers’ brutal power play the last three seasons. Vancouver’s power play ranked fifteenth in the league last year at 22.52 per cent, almost eight full percentage points over what the Flyers’ thirtieth-ranked power play could muster up.

Švejkovský said in previous interviews he isn’t afraid of drills or practices, trying to maximize whatever talent is put in front of him to succeed. “Well, this might sound crazy, but I was part of minor hockey when I was on the Giants staff and in the summers, I work with plenty of pros,” he said in an interview last season prior to the Canucks starting their regular season. “There were years where I had over 1200 practices. So, in some ways, you do so many different drills that eventually you begin to find variations and I look at every area of the ice and how a drill can focus on a certain area of a certain skill.”

Švejkovský, 48, was drafted in 1996 by Washington and played portions of four seasons with the Capitals from the 1996-97 season through to 1999-2000 when he was traded to Tampa Bay. A concussion ended his NHL career. He scored 23 goals and had 19 assists in 113 regular season games.

Švejkovský is the father of Lukas Švejkovský who was drafted by the Penguins in the fourth round (108th overall) of the 2020 NHL Draft. Since then the 23-year-old’s rights have been traded to Tampa Bay.
