Flyers lose lead late, lose in overtime to Capitals 2-1

For a game that is extremely important for the Capitals, wowie this game started slow. Of course, not a ton of value in this game for the Flyers, but I digress. Things began to pick up though after a mid-ice collision between Nicolas Aube-Kubel and Tom Wilson. Now with zero context you are probably thinking one of two things.

  1. NAK went after Wilson because ... well it’s Tom Wilson.
  2. NAK was the victim of a Wilson cheapshot

The correct answer? None of the above! It was just one of those weird collisions between two guys not exactly paying attention to their surroundings. Wilson came out on the worse end of it which, you just hate to see.

Anyway speaking of NAK, he was arguably the best Flyer in the opening 20 minutes; he looked like the player we saw last season, ton of pep in his step, and an aggressive yet calculated approach. It’s sad that all that comes to mind with this is “where has it been all season?”

Alex Lyon stood out as well stopping all 13 shots he faced in the period, picking up where he left off in his last outing vs. Pittsburgh. No score after one in Washington.

Man I thought the first period was boring, but the second really takes the cake in that regard. Lyon looked sharp again though, stopping a breakaway chance and a nice power play opportunity. The Flyers by in large dominated the period though. They outshot Washington 12-6, and out chanced them 22-6 at 5-on-5.

The third appeared sluggish at first but Scott Laughton finally broke the scoreless tie with an absolute snipe on a 2-on-1 rush. The play began with a great stretch pass from JVR and then Laughts took care of the rest.

Just when it looked like Lyon was about to steal the show and pick up his first NHL shutout, Lars Eller blasted a sharp angle shot by him to tie the game with about 40 seconds to go and force overtime. Although the Caps did this, not winning in regulation hands the Penguins the top seed in the East.

Despite the incredible efforts of Lyon, and a breakaway attempt by Laughton, the Capitals win the game on a goal by Conor Sheary who darted to the net to receive a pass by Nic Dowd. And with that, there is one more game left in this miserable season, and for that, we can all be thankful.
