After a bit of a delay — a 10 day layoff between the signing of contract and his return to the ice — Flyers prospect Cole Knuble made his professional debut with the Phantoms last night, getting the ball rolling in their 5-3 loss to Springfield on home ice.

For Knuble, it was a quick turnaround, arriving late Wednesday and only getting a bit of practice time in on Thursday after he finished all of his medical evaluations, but sprint from his arrival right into game action seemed to still serve him well. Knuble was eased into things well enough — skating on the right wing on a line with more veteran forwards in Jacob Gaucher and Anthony Richard — but while there seemed to be an initial plan to shelter him a bit in this debut, Knuble was able to hit the ground running well and demonstrate that the sheltering wasn’t wholly needed.

Knuble came out for this one with some jump, and even in something of a disjointed start for just about everyone on each side in that game, he was one of the notable standouts from the start, getting his legs under him quickly and finding his checking game with relative ease. His line was the first one to really get rolling, and as a result, they were the first ones able to get themselves on the board, as Anthony Richard picked up the feed from Knuble for a huge goal on the rush to get the Phantoms on the board after giving up the first goal of the game.

The budding connection between Knuble and Richard was certainly an eye-catching one, and not only did Knuble deliver a really nice setup on Richard’s goal early in the game, Richard returned the favor with a slick setup for Knuble in front of the net in the second period (a play which did see his shot ultimately sail high over the net, but it still looked like the two were feeding each other well). Expectations were kept manageable coming into this one, but Knuble really did pretty well blow them out of the water.

“Thought he was very good,” head coach John Snowden said after the game. “Thought he was very good. Really nice play to [Richard] on the first goal, it’s just a nice little touch play to space. You can see his responsibility. He wins his battles. He plays under guys and gets through guys, uses that leverage in battles. You can see he’s not afraid to go touch a puck first, take a hit to make a play. I thought his showcased his ability to make plays and just his brain and how he processes the game and, you know, you get thrown right into the fire and he does [well]. I thought he was excellent tonight.”

While he’ll still need to put in some work to get himself more comfortable with the Phantoms’ system, the more foundational elements of Knuble’s game were clicking well — he was creating some good looks through his passing game, he was checking well and playing with energy, and he showed well the results of the work he’s been putting in on his skating to add an extra step, as he didn’t really seem to struggle at all with the pace of play.

It wasn’t a perfect showing for Knuble, as he still had a few moments when it looked like his timing was a little off, or when despite his best efforts he was still pushed off of pucks, but those are things that will polish out with time and more physical maturity, and the high level of effort that he brought has already set a strong foundation for him.

Still, his immediate level of play was impressive, and saw him well rewarded, in turn — not only did he get his first professional point out of the way quickly, but he also earned himself a bit of extra usage as space opened up for it, like a shift on the top power play unit when Oliver Bonk was in the box, and an extra shift on the fourth line while Sawyer Boulton was serving a penalty. Knuble came into this debut with some fresher legs, and the Phantoms were certainly looking to take advantage of that, but there’s a lot that Knuble was doing well in this game to earn himself that extra ice.

Things are only going to get more difficult here, as the matchups get more critical and the situation more dire as the Phantoms are fighting tooth and nail to get themselves into the playoffs, and Knuble will have to keep up a high level of effort to keep the ball rolling. We’ll see where his game goes from here, but all in all, this was about as positive of an impression made in his debut as we could have hoped to see.
