Porter Martone keeps impressing. On Thursday night, the Philadelphia Flyers’ 6th overall pick in 2025 scored twice for Michigan State, who defeated Minnesota by a final score of 7-1 to clinch their third Big Ten regular season championship in a row.

Martone opened the scoring just over five minutes into the game, finishing a rush chance with a wicked shot that beat the goaltender cleanly.

The early goal helped set the tone for Michigan State, who controlled much of the play throughout the night and steadily pulled away on the scoreboard.

He struck again late in the second period, capitalizing on a power play opportunity to extend Michigan State’s lead to four and effectively put the game out of reach.

Much of Martone’s work on the man advantage continues to come from the left faceoff circle, where his one timer and quick release have created consistent offense for the Spartans throughout the season. He has shown a clear comfort operating from that spot, and while his role on the power play with the Flyers may turn out to be more of a net front presence, don’t write him running the power play from the left boards off quite yet.

With the two goal performance, Martone now has 23 goals in 31 games. That scoring rate leads all freshman forwards in the NCAA. His 1.45 points per game ranks second among players in the Big Ten conference, trailing only Gavin McKenna.

For Michigan State, that production has been an important part of another strong season. The Spartans have remained among the top ranked teams in the conference throughout the year, with Martone being a big driving force behind their success.

From the Flyers’ perspective, Martone’s transition to the NCAA game has been an encouraging step in his development path. His ability to generate offense both at even strength and on the power play has translated quickly to the college level, and his scoring rate has consistently remained among the best in the conference throughout the season.

The Spartans improved to 25-7-1 on the season. With the regular season winding down, this two game series against Minnesota also serves as a useful tune up before the Big Ten tournament. Finishing the series strongly would provide additional momentum as the Spartans shift their focus toward tournament play. They’ll play their final regular season game tonight at 8 p.m. ET.
