Welcome to BSH’s weekly prospect update, where we will be serving up stats and insight on what our homegrown players have been up to. This will include prospects in Canadian Juniors (BCHL, OHL, QMJHL & WHL), Europe (SHL, KHL), and NCAA college hockey. Notable Canadian junior performers this week:
Jay O’Brien (C), Penticton Vees (BCHL)
2018 1st Round Pick, 19th overall
Penticton takes down West Kelowna in the first round of the playoffs four games to one. Jay O’Brien led the team with 10 points (5 G, 5 A) in five games. They take on Vernon starting Friday.
Mason Millman (D), Saginaw Spirit (OHL)
2019 4th Round Pick, 103rd overall
The 18 year old keeps piling up the points and now has 44 (13 G, 31 A) in 58 games in his second full OHL season.
Yegor Serdyuk (RW), Victoriaville Tigres (QMJHL)
2019 6th Round Pick, 165th overall
Serdyuk’s disappointing second season is winding to an end. He is well-below his previous established point-per-game first QMJHL season with 40 points (16 G, 24 A) in 50 contests.
Wyatte Wylie (D), Everett Silvertips (WHL)
2018 5th Round Pick, 127th overall
Good news and bad news. Good news, Wylie notched his 14th goal and 50th assist in 62 games. Bad news? He sat out Sunday’s game with an undisclosed injury. Everett has five remaining regular season games before the playoffs start. You have to wonder if he sits until then if it is a little more serious.
Egor Zamula (D), Calgary Hitmen (WHL)
Undrafted Free Agent
Some bad news in case you didn’t hear, it was announced that he will have to undergo back surgery and miss the rest of the season. Zamula will finish with 28 points (7 G, 21 A) in 28 games for Calgary.
Roddy Ross (G), Seattle Thunderbirds (WHL)
2019 6th Round Pick, 169th overall
Aside from being pulled on Friday, not an overly terrible week for Ross. However, his season SV% is only at .908 through 49 games. It’s been a rough one for Ross in his first full season as a starting goalie in the WHL.
Notable European performers this week:
Linus Högberg (D), Växjö Lakers HC (SHL)
2016 5th Round Pick, 139th overall
The Hog sat out a couple games this week as he was a bit under the weather. He remains at 13 points (5 G, 8 A) in 48 games.
Olle Lycksell (RW/C), Linköping HC (SHL)
2017 6th Round Pick, 168th overall
An unusually quiet week for Lycksell who has been putting up the points lately. The second full year SHLer has 19 points (8 G, 11 A), a career-high, in 49 games.
Adam Ginning (D), Linköping HC (SHL)
2018 2nd Round Pick, 50th overall
Ginning just keeps getting steady third-line minutes in his second stint this season in the SHL. He has three points (2 G, 1 A) in 25 games.
Samuel Ersson (G), Brynäs IF (SHL)
2018 5th Round Pick, 143rd overall
A rough one for talented youngster Ersson who despite a great performance on Tuesday, was lit up in his other starts this week. He has a .898 SV% in 34 games, which ranks 19th among SHL goaltenders.
Marcus Westfält (C), Västerviks IK (Allsvenskan)
2018 7th Round Pick, 205th overall
Marcus Westfält has eight points (three goals and five assists) in 52 games.
David Bernhardt (D), SaiPa (Liiga)
2016 7th Round Pick, 199th overall
Since transferring to Liiga, Bernhardt has put up one goal and five assists in 31 games.
Ivan Fedotov (G), Traktor Chelyabinsk (KHL)
2015 7th Round Pick, 188th overall
The 23 year old ends his first full KHL regular season with a .931 SV% in 32 games. That ranks him 10th among KHL netminders.
Notable collegiate performers this week:
Bobby Brink (RW), University of Denver
2019 2nd Round Pick, 34th overall
Brink took this hit and has missed his last seven games. According to Meltzer he was only considered day-to-day, but perhaps it was more serious than we thought. The freshman has been outstanding this season with 24 points (11 G, 13 A) in 28 games. Denver will take on the University of Nebraska-Omaha in the first round of the NCHC playoffs. Jamey Baskow had this interesting note about Brink being week to week.
Wade Allison (RW), Western Michigan University
2016 2nd Round Pick, 52nd overall
I think we can all agree, a healthy Wade Allison is a very good Wade Allison. Prior to the start of the NCHC quarterfinals, Allison finished with 23 points (10 G, 13 A) in 26 games. WMU will face St. Cloud State in a best of three starting Friday.
Tanner Laczynski (C), Ohio State University
2016 6th Round Pick, 169th overall
A great weekend for Tanner and OSU as they knocked off Wisconsin in both games to take the series victory in the BIG10 playoffs first round. Lacyznski has 34 points (11 G, 23 A) in 36 games and will take on Michigan on Sunday in a single-elimination game. It could be Tanner’s last collegiate game.
Noah Cates (C/LW), University of Minnesota-Duluth
2017 5th Round Pick, 137th overall
Noah Cates ends his impressive sophomore regular season with 33 points (14 G, 19 A) in 34 games before he and UMD square off against Miami in the first round of the NCHC playoffs (a best of three-game series).
Bryce Brodzinski (RW), University of Minnesota
2019 7th Round Pick, 196th overall
Brodzinski was not an offensive factor in their big series win against Notre Dame this weekend in which they took games two and three to move on. The freshman Brodzinski is at 12 points (7 G, 5 A) in 37 games on the season and will go on to face Penn State in a single-elimination game on Sunday.
Gavin Hain (C), University of North Dakota
2018 6th Round Pick, 174th overall
After missing the last three weekends (six games), Hain was back this weekend as North Dakota took down Omaha in both contests. They will take on Colorado College in the first round of the NCHC playoffs in the best of three series. Hain has 10 points (2 G, 8 A) in 28 games in his sophomore season.
Cam York (D), University of Michigan
2019 1st Round Pick, 14th overall
York wasn’t an offensive factor in University of Michigan’s first round win against Michigan State in the BIG10 playoffs. York has 16 points (5 G, 11 A) in 30 games during his freshman season.
Wyatt Kalynuk (D), University of Wisconsin
2017 7th Round Pick, 196th overall
Kalynuk ends his junior season with a loss to Laczynski and OSU. He finished with a career-high 28 points (7 G, 21 A) in 28 games. There has been speculation that this could be his last collegiate season with an entry-level contract coming his way.
Ronnie Attard (D), Western Michigan University
2019 3rd Round Pick, 72nd overall
Attard picks up his eighth assist and 14th point on the season in 30 games.
Jack St. Ivany (D), Yale University
2018 4th Round Pick, 112nd overall
St. Ivany and Yale beat Union in the best of three first round of the ECAC tournament, taking games two and three. Next up will be a best of three against Quinnipiac this weekend. St. Ivany has collegiate career-high 16 points (1 G, 15 A) in 32 games.
