Flyers prospect report: Is Olle Lycksell emulating Oskar Lindblom’s SHL success?

Welcome to BSH’s weekly prospect update, where we will be serving up stats and insight on what our homegrown players have been up to. This will include prospects in Canadian Juniors (BCHL, OHL, QMJHL & WHL), Europe (SHL, KHL), and NCAA college hockey. If you have any questions or suggestions, feel free to leave them in the comments.

Notable Canadian junior performers this week:

Jay O’Brien (C), Penticton Vees (BCHL)
2018 1st Round Pick, 19th overall

  • 2/21 – 1 assist
  • 2/22 – 1 goal, 1 assist/

Jay O’Brien ends his first (and last) BCHL season with 66 points (25 G, 41 A) in 46 games while missing time with injuries. His 1.43 point-per-game was third highest in the league.

Mason Millman (D), Saginaw Spirit (OHL)
2019 4th Round Pick, 103rd overall

  • 2/20 – 1 assist, 7 shots
  • 2/21 – 2 assists, 2 shots, 2 PIM
  • 2/23 – 1 shot/

Not a bad weekend for Millman who continues to add onto his career-highs in assists and points. The second year OHLer has 38 points (13 G, 25 A) in 53 games, ranking him 14th among league defensemen.

Yegor Serdyuk (RW), Victoriaville Tigres (QMJHL)
2019 6th Round Pick, 165th overall

  • 2/20 – 1 assist, 2 shots, 5 PIM
  • 2/21 – 6 shots, 2 PIM
  • 2/23 – 1 goal, 3 shots/

Serdyuk putting together a decent February with six points (2 G, 4 A) in eight games. Overall on the season he has 15 goals and 22 assists in 45 games.

Wyatte Wylie (D), Everett Silvertips (WHL)
2018 5th Round Pick, 127th overall

  • 2/19 – 1 goal, 1 assist, 4 shots
  • 2/21 – 3 shots
  • 2/22 – 1 assist, 2 shots, 2 PIM
  • 2/23 – 2 assists, 7 shots, 2 PIM/

Wylie is closing back in on his point-per-game pace with 55 points (13 G, 42 A) in 56 games. The fourth year WHLer has only improved in his final year and it will be interesting to see how his game translates as a pro.

Egor Zamula (D), Calgary Hitmen (WHL)
Undrafted Free Agent

Some bad news in case you didn’t hear, it was announced that he will have to undergo back surgery and miss the rest of the season. Zamula will finish with 28 points (7 G, 21 A) in 28 games for Calgary.

Roddy Ross (G), Seattle Thunderbirds (WHL)
2019 6th Round Pick, 169th overall

  • 2/18 – 2 GA, 19 saves
  • 2/22 – 2 GA, 30 saves
  • 2/23 – 2 GA, 30 saves/

This may have been Ross’ best week of the season. The second year WHLer is now up to a somewhat respectable .910 SV% through 45 games which ranks 20th among the league.

Notable European performers this week:

Linus Högberg (D), Växjö Lakers HC (SHL)
2016 5th Round Pick, 139th overall

  • 2/20 – 20:04 TOI
  • 2/22 – 1 shot, 16:12 TOI/

Nothing doing this week on the scoreboard for The Hog, but getting up to 20 minutes in a game was certainly a change in most recent months. Linus remains at 13 points (5 G, 8 A) in 44 games.

Olle Lycksell (RW/C), Linköping HC (SHL)
2017 6th Round Pick, 168th overall

  • 2/20 – 1 goal, 3 shots, 13:29 TOI
  • 2/22 – 14:25 TOI/

Another goal for the talented Lycksell who is up to 18 points (7 G, 11 A) in 43 games as a 20 year old in the league. Just for reference, only two players 20 an2/d under have more points than Lycksell in the SHL this season. Here is a video of him celebrating his OT goal from Thursday.

Adam Ginning (D), Linköping HC (SHL)
2018 2nd Round Pick, 50th overall

  • 2/20 – 08:33 TOI
  • 2/22 – 08:33 TOI/

Yes, it is quite weird to have the same exact TOI in consecutive games. Ginning has had a weird season in general between being demoted to spending time with Team Sweden at the World Junior Championships.

Samuel Ersson (G), Brynäs IF (SHL)
2018 5th Round Pick, 143rd overall

  • 2/22 – 2 GA, 25 saves/

An excellent victory for Ersson this week who overall has been playing much better than his overall save percentage of .900 (18th in the SHL) would indicate.

Marcus Westfält (C), Västerviks IK (Allsvenskan)
2018 7th Round Pick, 205th overall

Marcus Westfält has seven points (three goals and three assists) in 48 games.

David Bernhardt (D), SaiPa (Liiga)
2016 7th Round Pick, 199th overall

Since transferring to Liiga, Bernhardt has put up one goal and four assists in 29 games.

Ivan Fedotov (G), Traktor Chelyabinsk (KHL)
2015 7th Round Pick, 188th overall

The 22 year old has a .932 SV% in 30 games this season in the KHL. That ranks him 9th among KHL netminders. He had a shutout this week and has quite proved himself in his first KHL season.

Notable collegiate performers this week:

Bobby Brink (RW), University of Denver
2019 2nd Round Pick, 34th overall

Brink took this hit and has missed his last three games. According to Meltzer he is only considered day-to-day so maybe we see him back next weekend, but that did not look pretty.

Wade Allison (RW), Western Michigan University
2016 2nd Round Pick, 52nd overall

  • 2/21 – 3 shots
  • 2/22 – 1 assist, 3 shots/

Good news is Allison was back in action this weekend after missing last Saturday’s game with an undisclosed injury. He registered his 10th assist and 18th point in 22 games.

Tanner Laczynski (C), Ohio State University
2016 6th Round Pick, 169th overall

  • 2/21 – 3 shots
  • 2/22 – 1 goal, 1 assist, 4 shots/

Laczynski and OSU come back after a week off to take both games against Michigan state. Tanner added his 8th goal and 21st assist in 32 games during his senior year.

Noah Cates (LW), University of Minnesota-Duluth
2017 5th Round Pick, 137th overall

  • 2/21 – 1 assist, 3 shots, 17 PIM, 5 for 11 FOW
  • 2/22 – 1 assist, 4 shots, 3 for 16 FOW/

Cates did well against Allison and Attard’s WMU, though the teams actually split the weekend. The sophomore has 28 points (13 G, 15 A) in 30 games in what should be considered a breakout season.

Bryce Brodzinski (RW), University of Minnesota
2019 7th Round Pick, 196th overall

  • 2/21 – 1 goal, 4 shots, 2 for 3 FOW
  • 2/22 – 1 assist, 2 shots, 4 for 5 FOW/

Brodzinski breaks a four-game pointless drought with his seventh goal and fifth assist of the season in 32 games. Nine of his points have come in his last 19 games.

Gavin Hain (C), University of North Dakota
2018 6th Round Pick, 174th overall

Hain sat out both games again this weekend with an undisclosed injury, so the sophomore remains at 10 points (2 G, 8 A) in 26 games.

Cam York (D), University of Michigan
2019 1st Round Pick, 14th overall

Despite Michigan losing both games to Notre Dame this weekend, York was a combined plus 1 in both games. In his freshman season, Cam York has 16 points (5 G, 11) in 26 games.

Wyatt Kalynuk (D), University of Wisconsin
2017 7th Round Pick, 196th overall

  • 2/21 – 4 shots, 2 PIM
  • 2/22 – 1 assist, 3 shots/

Despite Wisconsin putting up 13 goals against Arizona State this weekend, Kalynuk only helped with one of them. The junior has 24 points (6 G, 18 A) in 32 games and is only one point from tying his collegiate career-high.

Ronnie Attard (D), Western Michigan University
2019 3rd Round Pick, 72nd overall

Three straight games with no points for Attard. The freshman remains at 12 points (6 G, 6 A) in 26 games.

Jack St. Ivany (D), Yale University
2018 4th Round Pick, 112nd overall

  • 2/21 – 2 shots, 2 PIM
  • 2/22 – 3 shots/

Not even an assist this week for St. Ivany who will remain at 14 points (1 G, 13 A) in 27 games.
