Welcome to BSH’s weekly prospect update, where we will be serving up stats and insight on what our homegrown players have been up to. This will include prospects in Canadian Juniors (BCHL, OHL, QMJHL & WHL), Europe (SHL, KHL), and NCAA college hockey. Notable Canadian junior performers this week:
Jay O’Brien (C), Penticton Vees (BCHL)
2018 1st Round Pick, 19th overall
Jay O’Brien ended his first (and last) BCHL regular season with 66 points (25 G, 41 A) in 46 games while missing time with injuries. He begins his first (and last) BCHL playoffs with seven points in three games as Penticton destroyed West Kelowna in all three games.
Mason Millman (D), Saginaw Spirit (OHL)
2019 4th Round Pick, 103rd overall
An uneven week for Millman who climbed up to 41 points (13 G, 28 A) in 55 games this season as a second year junior player. It was his first three-point game since January 4th.
Yegor Serdyuk (RW), Victoriaville Tigres (QMJHL)
2019 6th Round Pick, 165th overall
Serdyuk’s disappointing second QMJHL season continues as he collects only his 16th goal and 38th point in 47 games this season. He had 65 in 63 last year.
Wyatte Wylie (D), Everett Silvertips (WHL)
2018 5th Round Pick, 127th overall
- 2/26 – 3 assists, 5 shots
- 2/28 – 1 assist, 7 shots
- 2/29 – 2 assists, 6 shots
- 3/1 – 1 assist, 3 shots/
That’s uhh…a lot of shots for a defenseman in a week. Wylie has 199 shots this season in 60 games (with eight games remaining). His career-high was 223 last year in 67 regular season games. Wylie is up to 61 points (13 G, 48 A) in 60 games, ranking him 2nd among WHL defensemen this season.
Egor Zamula (D), Calgary Hitmen (WHL)
Undrafted Free Agent
Some bad news in case you didn’t hear, it was announced that he will have to undergo back surgery and miss the rest of the season. Zamula will finish with 28 points (7 G, 21 A) in 28 games for Calgary.
Roddy Ross (G), Seattle Thunderbirds (WHL)
2019 6th Round Pick, 169th overall
- 2/28 – 3 GA, 13 saves/
Rough weekend for Thunderbirds goalies in general as Ross’ backup, Blake Lyda, got both starts and gave up a combined 11 goals. Granted, Ross wasn’t much better in relief on Friday and now has a season save percentage of .909 in 46 appearances.
Notable European performers this week:
Linus Högberg (D), Växjö Lakers HC (SHL)
2016 5th Round Pick, 139th overall
Good ice-time for The Hog this week, but no points means he remains at 13 points (5 G, 8 A) in 47 games.
Olle Lycksell (RW/C), Linköping HC (SHL)
2017 6th Round Pick, 168th overall
Lycksell picks up his eight goal and 19 point in 46 games this season, all SHL career-highs. Here is his game-winning snipe from last week. The kid has a nice shot.
Adam Ginning (D), Linköping HC (SHL)
2018 2nd Round Pick, 50th overall
Adam Ginning gaining more ice-time after recent weeks relegated to seventh defensemen duties. In 22 SHL games he has two goals and one assist.
Samuel Ersson (G), Brynäs IF (SHL)
2018 5th Round Pick, 143rd overall
Brynas lost both matches in which Ersson started this week. He had been riding a nice little hot streak there for a bit. Ersson has a .898 SV% in 31 appearances in his first SHL season.
Marcus Westfält (C), Västerviks IK (Allsvenskan)
2018 7th Round Pick, 205th overall
Marcus Westfält has seven points (three goals and four assists) in 50 games.
David Bernhardt (D), SaiPa (Liiga)
2016 7th Round Pick, 199th overall
Since transferring to Liiga, Bernhardt has put up one goal and five assists in 31 games.
Ivan Fedotov (G), Traktor Chelyabinsk (KHL)
2015 7th Round Pick, 188th overall
The 23 year old ends his first full KHL regular season with a .931 SV% in 32 games. That ranks him 10th among KHL netminders.
Notable collegiate performers this week:
Bobby Brink (RW), University of Denver
2019 2nd Round Pick, 34th overall
Brink took this hit and has missed his last five games. According to Meltzer he was only considered day-to-day, but perhaps it was more serious than we thought. The freshman has been outstanding this season with 24 points (11 G, 13 A) in 28 games.
Wade Allison (RW), Western Michigan University
2016 2nd Round Pick, 52nd overall
Hey, at least he was able to skate on consecutive weekends after missing a couple games. Allison has 19 points (8 G, 11 A) in 24 games. WMU lost both games against UND.
Tanner Laczynski (C), Ohio State University
2016 6th Round Pick, 169th overall
These are the kind of weekends we need to see from Laczynski who is finishing up his collegiate career. The senior has 31 points (10 G, 21 A) in 34 games. Check out goal nine and ten.
Noah Cates (C/LW), University of Minnesota-Duluth
2017 5th Round Pick, 137th overall
If you haven’t boarded the Noah Cates bandwagon there is still time! Cates notched his 14th goal and 16th/17th assists this weekend (in 32 games). Check out his goal here.
Bryce Brodzinski (RW), University of Minnesota
2019 7th Round Pick, 196th overall
No points for the freshman who remains at 12 points (7 G, 5 A) in 34 games as U of Minn falls to Cam York’s Michigan in both games.
Gavin Hain (C), University of North Dakota
2018 6th Round Pick, 174th overall
Hain sat out both games again this weekend with an undisclosed injury (so make that three weekends in a row), so the sophomore remains at 10 points (2 G, 8 A) in 26 games.
Cam York (D), University of Michigan
2019 1st Round Pick, 14th overall
No point weekends for Cam York should make everyone sad. The freshman defensemen has 16 points (5 G, 11 A) in 28 games.
Wyatt Kalynuk (D), University of Wisconsin
2017 7th Round Pick, 196th overall
Wisconsin took both games this weekend from Laczynski’s OSU. Kalynuk added assists 19 and 20 to give him 26 points on the season to set a new collegiate career-high.
Ronnie Attard (D), Western Michigan University
2019 3rd Round Pick, 72nd overall
That’s a lot of penalty minutes. Attard made contact to the head on a hit and received a game misconduct, but didn’t face any supplemental discipline from the NCHC. He has 13 points (6 G, 7 A) in 28 games.
Jack St. Ivany (D), Yale University
2018 4th Round Pick, 112nd overall
Quiet week on the score-sheet for the sophomore who has 14 points (1 G, 13 A) in 29 games this season.
