Welcome to BSH’s weekly prospect update, where we will be serving up stats and insight on what our homegrown players have been up to. This will include prospects in Canadian Juniors (BCHL, OHL, QMJHL & WHL), Europe (SHL, KHL), and NCAA college hockey. Notable Canadian junior performers this week:
Jay O’Brien (C), Penticton Vees (BCHL)
2018 1st Round Pick, 19th overall
O’Brien is back after missing 12 games due to a lower-body injury. He has 50 points (17 G, 33 A) in 36 games in his first season in the BCHL. He is 3rd in the league in points-per-game.
Mason Millman (D), Saginaw Spirit (OHL)
2019 4th Round Pick, 103rd overall
Not a huge weekend for Millman, but he did score his 12th goal of the season. The 2nd year OHLer has 28 points in 40 games.
Yegor Serdyuk (RW), Victoriaville Tigres (QMJHL)
2019 6th Round Pick, 165th overall
Serdyuk facing a similar disappointing 2nd season after a breakout 1st to Maksim Sushko (though he seems to be adjusting well to being a pro this season). Serdyuk has 26 points (11 G, 15 A) in 32 games.
Wyatte Wylie (D), Everett Silvertips (WHL)
2018 5th Round Pick, 127th overall
A typical-Wylie week. The 4th year WHLer has 40 points (11 G, 29 A) in 43 games with Everett. Those totals put him 3rd among WHL defensemen.
Egor Zamula (D), Calgary Hitmen (WHL)
Undrafted Free Agent
Some bad news in case you didn’t hear. After playing superbly for Team Russia in the World Junior Championship (five points in seven games), it was announced that he will have to undergo back surgery and miss the rest of the season. Zamula will finish with 28 points (7 G, 21 A) in 28 games for Calgary.
Roddy Ross (G), Seattle Thunderbirds (WHL)
2019 6th Round Pick, 169th overall
Another up and down weekend for the uneven netminder. Ross has a disappointing .909 SV% in 33 games.
Notable European performers this week:
Linus Högberg (D), Växjö Lakers HC (SHL)
2016 5th Round Pick, 139th overall
Status quo for The Hog, getting mostly 3rd pairing minutes.
Olle Lycksell (RW/C), Linköping HC (SHL)
2017 6th Round Pick, 168th overall
Lycksell misses one game, but comes back and puts up his 15th point in 33 games this season.
Adam Ginning (D), Linköping HC (SHL)
2018 2nd Round Pick, 50th overall
Ginning seems to be sticking around after coming back from a demotion last week. He has one point in 13 SHL games.
Samuel Ersson (G), Brynäs IF (SHL)
2018 5th Round Pick, 143rd overall
- 1/16 – 2 GA, 28 saves/
Ersson finally gets back into a game and helps propel his team to a shootout win. The 1st year SHL netminder has a .897 SV% in 19 games.
Marcus Westfält (C), Västerviks IK (Allsvenskan)
2018 7th Round Pick, 205th overall
Marcus Westfält has six points (three goals and three assists) in 38 games.
David Bernhardt (D), SaiPa (Liiga)
2016 7th Round Pick, 199th overall
Since transferring to Liiga, Bernhardt has put up one goal and three assists in 18 games.
Ivan Fedotov (G), Traktor Chelyabinsk (KHL)
2015 7th Round Pick, 188th overall
The 22 year old has a .930 SV% in 23 games this season in the KHL. That ranks him 18th among KHL netminders.
Notable collegiate performers this week:
Bobby Brink (RW), University of Denver
2019 2nd Round Pick, 34th overall
Brink came up big in Saturday’s game where he tied the game with 14 second left in the game. It was his 9th goal and 10th assist of the year. Check out his goal here. The kid has a hell of a shot.
Wade Allison (RW), Western Michigan University
2016 2nd Round Pick, 52nd overall
Yes, they were playing Colorado State but heck did Allison need a weekend like this. The once promising power forward went back for a senior season and could excite Flyers prospect-heads again if this return to form is real. Allison, in an injury-riddled season, has nine points (3 G, 6 A) in 13 games.
Tanner Laczynski (C), Ohio State University
2016 6th Round Pick, 169th overall
Good weekends for both Allison AND Laczynski. I must be in 2018. Nevertheless, Tanner has 25 points (7 G, 18 A) in 24 games this season. The senior has been a point-per-game player in every season except for his freshman year (in which he had 32 in 34).
Noah Cates (LW), University of Minnesota-Duluth
2017 5th Round Pick, 137th overall
Cates and UMD were clobbered by St. Cloud State this weekend. Cates did however pick up his 21st point (11 G, 10 A) in 22 games this season. He is just two points away from tying his freshman total (23 in 40).
Bryce Brodzinski (RW), University of Minnesota
2019 7th Round Pick, 196th overall
No regulation games for Minnesota this week. Brodzinski hasn’t exactly lit it up his first year, but does have six points (2 G, 4 A) in 22 games.
Gavin Hain (C), University of North Dakota
2018 6th Round Pick, 174th overall
A rare two-point weekend for Hain who has 10 points (2 G, 8 A) in 22 contests.
Cam York (D), University of Michigan
2019 1st Round Pick, 14th overall
Not a huge weekend for York personally, but Michigan did fairly well against a decent Penn State squad. Cameron has 11 points (4 G, 7 A) in 18 games his freshman year.
Wyatt Kalynuk (D), University of Wisconsin
2017 7th Round Pick, 196th overall
Kalynuk will always get his shots; he has 77 of them in 22 games to go along with his 16 points (5 G, 11 A).
Ronnie Attard (D), Western Michigan University
2019 3rd Round Pick, 72nd overall
It has not been a bad freshman season. Attard picks up his sixth point of the season in 16 games.
Jack St. Ivany (D), Yale University
2018 4th Round Pick, 112nd overall
St. Ivany nets his first goal of the season on Friday night. Overall he has 10 points in 17 games. He is just four points away from tying his season-high from his freshman year last year.
