Flyers prospect report: While Jay O’Brien keeps the pace, Bobby Brink may have hit the wall

Welcome to BSH’s weekly prospect update, where we will be serving up stats and insight on what our homegrown players have been up to. This will include prospects in Canadian Juniors (BCHL, OHL, QMJHL & WHL), Europe (SHL, KHL), and NCAA college hockey. If you have any questions or suggestions, feel free to leave them in the comments.

Notable Canadian junior performers this week:

Jay O’Brien (C), Penticton Vees (BCHL)
2018 1st Round Pick, 19th overall

  • 11/13 – 1 goal, 1 assist
  • 11/15 – 1 goal, 3 assists, 2 PIM
  • 11/16 – 1 assist/

The great “is Jay O’Brien actually a prospect at this point” debate will rage on. He has 40 points (15 G, 25 A) in 26 games.

Mason Millman (D), Saginaw Spirit (OHL)
2019 4th Round Pick, 103rd overall

  • 11/14 – 1 shot, 2 PIM
  • 11/16 – 2 shots, 2 PIM/

Millman’s offense has slowed in recent weeks, with just one point in his last five games. The 2nd year OHLer has 11 points (5 G, 6 A) in 21 games.

Yegor Serdyuk (RW), Victoriaville Tigres (QMJHL)
2019 6th Round Pick, 165th overall

Serdyuk has been on a disappointing cold streak (three points in his last 10 games) and he sat out both games this week. The 2nd year QMJHLer has 13 points (8 G, 5 A) in 18 games overall.

Wyatte Wylie (D), Everett Silvertips (WHL)
2018 5th Round Pick, 127th overall

Wylie has yet to go longer than two games without a point. He is up to 19 points (5 G, 14 A) in 19 games this season, which is highest among defensemen on the team and 5th overall in the WHL.

Egor Zamula (D), Calgary Hitmen (WHL)
Undrafted Free Agent

Zamula still remains behind fellow WHL prospect Wylie in the WHL defensive scoring leaderboard. He has 18 points (6 G, 12 A) in 19 games.

Roddy Ross (G), Seattle Thunderbirds (WHL)
2019 6th Round Pick, 169th overall

  • 11/16 – 4 GA, 47 saves/

Wasn’t an easy one for Ross who faced a barrage of shots, but was able to stop all shots in a shootout for the victory. Ross has a .910 SV% through 15 games.

Notable European performers this week:

Linus Högberg (D), Växjö Lakers HC (SHL)
2016 5th Round Pick, 139th overall

  • 11/14 – 3 shots, 16:04 TOI
  • 11/16 – 3 shots, 17:49 TOI/

Getting pucks to the net? Check. Getting consistent ice-time? Check. Status quo for The Hog who sits at six points (2 G, 4 A) in 18 games.

Olle Lycksell (RW/C), Linköping HC (SHL)
2017 6th Round Pick, 168th overall

  • 11/14 – 1 assist, 3 shots, 13:36 TOI

The 20 year old continues to improve and get featured into the offense on a consistent basis. Lycksell has 12 points (3 G, 9 A) in 18 games this year, already matching his high from last season (which took him 51 games to do).

Samuel Ersson (G), Brynäs IF (SHL)
2018 5th Round Pick, 143rd overall

Ersson has a .872 SV% in seven games and did not play this week.

Marcus Westfält (C), Västerviks IK (Allsvenskan)

Marcus Westfält has three points (a goal and two assists) in 20 games.

Adam Ginning (D), HC Vita Hästen (Allsvenskan)

Ginning has been struggling and has now been loaned to Vita Hasten of the Allsvenskan League. In seven games so far he has produced three assists. He has participated with Team Sweden in the U20 International Tournament and had two points (both assists) in eight games.

David Bernhardt (D), SaiPa (Liiga)
2016 7th Round Pick, 199th overall

Bernhardt finally gets into a game after getting transferred to the Finnish League. He has been held scoreless through two games.

Ivan Fedotov (G), Traktor Chelyabinsk (KHL)
2015 7th Round Pick, 188th overall

The 22 year old has a .926 SV% in 13 games this season in the KHL.

Notable collegiate performers this week:

Bobby Brink (RW), University of Denver
2019 2nd Round Pick, 34th overall

  • 11/15 – 3 shots, 2 PIM, 1 for 2 FOW
  • 11/16 – 2 shots, 0 for 1 FOW/

Denver both tied and lost a game this weekend against Gavin Hain and North Dakota. Bobby Brink finally seems to be hitting that freshman wall. Despite having seven points (3 G, 7 A) in 12 games, he has been held off the scoresheet in his last five games.

Wade Allison (RW), Western Michigan University
2016 2nd Round Pick, 52nd overall

After picking up an assist on Friday, Allison sat out another game this season because of an injury on Saturday. The divisive prospect has four points (1 G, 3 A) in seven games.

Tanner Laczynski (C), Ohio State University
2016 6th Round Pick, 169th overall

10 points (2 G, 8 A) in 10 games for Laczynski, who falls out of the Top 50 in NCAA scoring. Ohio State was off this week, but will be back in action against Penn State this weekend.

Noah Cates (LW), University of Minnesota-Duluth
2017 5th Round Pick, 137th overall

  • 11/15 – 3 shots, 0 for 1 FOW
  • 11/16 – 1 goal, 3 shots/

Noah Cates scores a powerplay goal on Saturday to bring his season point-total to seven points (5 G, 2 A) in 10 games. You can check out his goal here.

Bryce Brodzinski (RW), University of Minnesota
2019 7th Round Pick, 196th overall

  • 11/15 – 2 PIM, 1 for 2 FOW
  • 11/16 – 2 shots, 3 for 5 FOW/

While UMinn got annihilated by Penn State this weekend (8-2 and 6-3 losses), Brodzinski was actually a +1 in both games.

Gavin Hain (C), University of North Dakota
2018 6th Round Pick, 174th overall

  • 11/15 – 1 shot, 2 PIM, 0 for 1 FOW
  • 11/16 – 1 shot, 0 for 1 FOW/

As mentioned above, North Dakota got the better of Denver this weekend. Hain wasn’t much of a factor on offense, so he remains at three points (1 G, 2 A) in 10 games.

Cam York (D), University of Michigan
2019 1st Round Pick, 14th overall

Please, start doing that offense again young Cameron. He has been held scoreless in four straight games and has four points (1 G, 3 A) in nine games overall.

Wyatt Kalynuk (D), University of Wisconsin
2017 7th Round Pick, 196th overall

Kalynuk picks up just his second goal of the season, but does have 10 points in 12 games this season. That puts him just outside the Top 10 in scoring among NCAA defenseman and six points off the lead. He fired off this laser on Saturday.

Ronnie Attard (D), Western Michigan University
2019 3rd Round Pick, 72nd overall

Attard sitting out both games this weekend with an undisclosed injury. The freshman has five points (4 G, 1 A) in 10 games.

Jack St. Ivany (D), Yale University
2018 4th Round Pick, 112nd overall

  • 11/15 – 1 assist, 4 shots, 2 PIM
  • 11/16 – 1 assist, 4 shots/

Yale suffered back-to-back losses this weekend against Dartmouth (4-3 loss) and Harvard (6-1). St. Ivany was a minus-3 in Saturday’s game. The sophomore has four points (all assists) in six games this season.
