The doldrums of the offseason have been staved off for a little while longer, as the Flyers have offered up one small news happening to keep everyone at least a little bit entertained. They announced this morning that they’ve extended defenseman Adam Ginning, signing the pending RFA to a two-year contract extension.

This contract begins as a two-way deal, but then changes over to a one-way in the second year. This means that Ginning can still be sent to the AHL in both years of the contract, but in the second, he’ll be paid his NHL salary ($787,500) regardless of which league he’s playing in.

And while this isn’t the flashiest news that the Flyers could have dropped on us, it is still a nice bit of business taken care of. Ginning had himself a solid season last year — he was steady in his AHL time, and when he was called upon when the Flyers were badly depleted on the back end at the end of the season, he showed some real flashes of readiness and positive play during that stretch. (He’s also toiled away a bit in the AHL while the organization has faced a bit of a logjam at the defense position, so offering that one-way switch in the second year of the contract is a nice gesture of good faith, if nothing else.)

In any event, this is another defensive depth option locked down for the Flyers, and while at this point, who knows how much more of that we’ll be seeing done in the next few weeks, all the same, we expect to see Ginning well in the mix for a roster spot with the Flyers, come training camp.
