Flyers recall defenseman Adam Ginning from Lehigh Valley

Although they didn’t make it official, it appears the Flyers have called up defenseman Adam Ginning from Lehigh Valley on Sunday.

Although the club hasn’t yet made it official, it appears that the Flyers are in the process of calling up defenseman Adam Ginning from the Lehigh Valley Phantoms. The news was revealed by Phantoms communications director and broadcaster Bob Rotruck in a tweet earlier Sunday afternoon, ahead of their game against Hartford.

Ginning has played five games for the Flyers this season and is still looking for his first point with the club this season. Meanwhile in Lehigh Valley, Ginning, 26, has played 31 games with a goal and three assists. Ginning last saw game action with the Flyers on Oct. 25 when the Flyers defeated the Islanders in a 4-3 shootout victory. The blueliner has been called up a few times this season, the latest when was he called up on Feb. 21 to Philadelphia only to be sent back down on Feb. 25.

What the move could mean

Clearly, there could be a few reasons Ginning is being called up prior to the Flyers playing Toronto on the road on Monday night. One of the Flyers defenseman could be injured, so Ginning travelling to Toronto could be simply being a replacement for one of the banged-up bodies. Emil Andrae played the least amount of ice time with 14:53 but looked no worse for wear by game’s end. The Flyers were led by Travis Sanheim who played nearly 26 minutes (25:57) while his defensive partner, Rasmus Ristolainen, played just slightly less (23:04). So it could be something as basic as Ginning being called up to replace a blueliner who might not be able to go Monday night, or could be a game-time decision.

Of course, given the fact the trade deadline is Friday afternoon, any sort of call up from Lehigh Valley could suggest the Flyers could be making a trade and shipping out a defenseman who has been getting plenty of attention since the Olympics. Rasmus Ristolainen has been discussed often with various teams interested in his services. So Ginning being called up could be a back-up plan if a trade becomes far more concrete between the Flyers and another team and a defenseman gets dealt.

A far less likely scenario is the Flyers decide to go with 11 forwards and seven defensemen, with Tocchet opting to go with Ginning over Noah Juulsen. Juulsen’s last game was Feb. 25, the first game back after the Olympic break and a 3-1 victory for Washington. Juulsen played 15:08 that night and had a clean sheet across the board.

Whatever the reason is, it’ll be revealed sooner than later. Either way, Ginning might get some playing time for Philadelphia for the first time in a few months.
