The Flyers are returning from their road trip with a chance to clinch a playoff spot within reach, and as they’re set to get rolling into these final two games of the regular season, they’ve made one more adjustment to their roster.

The Flyers announced this afternoon, ahead of Lehigh Valley’s final home game of the season against Cleveland, that they’ve recalled newly-acquired defenseman from the Phantoms.
With no practice scheduled for the Flyers today, it remains a question mark whether this move is injury related — Nick Seeler did take a pretty big spill in last night’s game, for one, though he was able to finish the game — or whether the team just wants to use at least one of these final games to get a look at one of their newest prospects at this level.
Whatever the reason, Jiricek presents as an interesting potential addition to their lineup. Since his arrival, he’s certainly helped to offer a bit of a boost for the Phantoms offensively, as he’s chipped in 13 points over his first 13 games (including an assist in last night’s huge win over the Bridgeport Islanders), stepping up as an effective playmaker at even strength, and showing particular flash for the team on the power play, as he’s shown real poise as a distributor on their top power play unit while also remaining a threat to score at any time off the strength of his shot, and his ability to thread it through traffic. There’s a lot to like about his offensive toolkit, and that’s all been clicking well for him so far.
On the flip side, though, the defensive side of his game has left a bit to be desired. Jiricek has shown some flashes where he’s been able to step up and make an aggressive move to kill a play before it turns into something dangerous, but he’s been largely quite inconsistent in this area, and there have now been a handful of goals against that have come directly as a result of him making the wrong decision on who to cover on a given play, or from him sticking with his man but defending him passively, and getting burned in turn.
So, the points have all been well and good, but it’s clear that there’s more that needs to be done to polish out Jiricek’s game, to get to the point where he can be successful as an everyday player at the next level. All the same, the Flyers will need to see what he can do at this level eventually, and if he does end up getting in for a game before the end of the season, however it shakes out for him, it will be informative.
With this move, the Flyers have one more recall at this disposal for the rest of the season, so we’ll see if there’s another move on the horizon.
