Flyers recall defenseman Ronnie Attard

The Philadelphia Flyers are using the meaningless part of their season to test out a couple prospects and the latest if defenseman Ronnie Attard.

Announced by the team on Monday, the Flyers have recalled the young blueliner from AHL Lehigh Valley.

The 2019 third-round pick made his NHL debut last season for the Flyers after finishing his collegiate career at Western Michigan University. He appeared in 15 total games down the final stretch of the 2021-22 regular season, scoring two goals and four points total.

Attard was a longshot to make the final roster out of training camp several months ago, so the 24-year-old has spent the entire season so far down in the AHL, developing away. In 64 games with the Phantoms, he has scored 11 goals and 30 points, leading all defenseman on the team in goals and is tied for sixth among all AHL blueliners in that category, as well.

With this transaction, the Flyers now have just one more call-up to use until the end of the regular season, as each team is allotted a total of four recalls after the trade deadline. So far, Philadelphia has used them on Tyson Foerster, Yegor Zamula, and now Attard (goaltender Samuel Ersson was an emergency recall).

What should we expect from Attard? Well, he know he has a wicked shot from long range and hopefully will get plenty of opportunity to show it off throughout these final six games. Other than that, just enough capability to potentially fight for a spot on next year’s roster.

The Flyers are already mathematically eliminated from the playoffs, so the team has no excuse not to just hand the minutes to as many young guys as possible, as they are the only players that could realistically see themselves still in Philadelphia by the time training camp comes around in September.

Let’s just see what Ronnie can handle.
