It’s been a busy week of action around here, as the Flyers wrapped up their rookie camp earlier this week and kicked off their main camp yesterday morning. It’s been a bit frenetic, with more than 50 players vying to make quick impressions and stand out above the rest, but just as we’ve gotten started, a trio of players are already on their way home.
The Flyers announced this afternoon that they’ve reduced their training camp roster by three players, sending home Austin Moline (a 2024 seventh-round pick), Nathan Quinn (a 2025 sixth-round pick), and Joe Costanzo (one of their two camp invites).
And these cuts, all in all, aren’t hugely surprising. Both Quinn and Moline were already on the outside looking in on spots in rookie camp, as they failed to crack the first night’s lineup for the rookie games, and were only rotated in for the second, while Costanzo was brought in just to help fill out the rookie camp roster, getting another goalie in the mix to support Carson Bjarnason, and only played for half of the Saturday game. Each of these three are still really raw in their development, and were never going to be in consideration for those NHL roster battles, and there seemed to be no sense in beleaguering the situation. We might have been struck by a bit of surprise that a cut was made before so much as the first scrimmages of camp even took place, but it remains that the Flyers have a very crowded camp lineup and a limited amount of time to make evaluations on a number of key players, and a decisive move like this allows them to work a little smarter, be a little more focused in their efforts.
Meanwhile, these three players will take the lessons they learned through their stints in these camps with them back to their junior teams, and focus on continuing their development.
