Just because this week marks the start of the 2026-27 season does not mean teams are content with their current rosters. According to one report, the Philadelphia Flyers are one of those teams looking to potentially make a move in the near future. Or, at the very least are sneaking around looking for a certain player.
According to The Fourth Period’s David Pagnotta, the Flyers are already looking to acquire some help on their blue line.
“One team believed to be eyeing defensive depth: Philadelphia,” Pagnotta wrote in his latest rumor roundup.
Now, the elephant in the room is the source. Pagnotta, famously, confirmed that Claude Giroux signed with the Flyers in early July when he definitely did not and it was even weeks before the franchise legend re-signed with the Ottawa Senators. That is what his name is going to be associated with in Philadelphia for a very long time.
When your entire business revolves around trying to give the latest scoops that no one has, maybe you play a little bit loose with the information. More loose than those top-tier NHL insiders who don’t rely so heavily on being first to everything.
But, this mention is still interesting enough to acknowledge it and think about whether it makes sense or not.
Do the Flyers actually need more defensive depth?
The Flyers did address some of this over the last several months. They traded winger Bobby Brink to bring in young project blueliner David Jiricek, and then exchanged Emil Andrae for Simon Benoit as part of the Joseph Woll trade with the Toronto Maple Leafs. Two very small changes but they did add more of an element for what the Flyers want their blue line to look like — bigger, and get someone who has the potential to quarterback a power play and someone who loves to hit and fight so much more than the 5-foot-9 former Flyers defenseman.
But taking a broader look at the blue line, and this rumored desire to trade for a defenseman really only makes sense in the right scenario.
There is a top three that is more than solidified. Travis Sanheim, Cam York, and Jamie Drysdale are three defenders who are at the very least top-four caliber and they’re signed to long-term deals. Rasmus Ristolainen is the outlier in the top four and has one year remaining on his contract. It is very unlikely that the Flyers re-sign him — so he’s either going to be traded at some point this season or just walk as an unrestricted free agent.
His job is the one that appears to be up for grabs next year, if not sooner. The Flyers just so happen to also have Oliver Bonk who fits the bill almost perfectly for what they want to round out that group, as someone who is capable of playing physical but does have more offensive characteristics than someone like Ristolainen. He is more than a strong contender to just be added to that cemented trio — so where else are the Flyers looking?
Nick Seeler’s job isn’t entirely secure, even if he’s playing some decent hockey he’s a No. 5 physical defenseman that is 33 years old. The runway is going to come to an end, eventually. Then there’s basically a grab bag of blueliners who could be fighting for that final spot along with Jiricek. Ty Murchison is one and Spencer Gill is another who could find themselves with an NHL job in a year or two if everything pans out for them.
The Flyers can just be more patient with the roles on their blue line and if they do go down that route, since they certainly like Gill as a prospect and also have the giant Maksim Sokolovskii looming in the corner to maybe contend for a spot in a few years, then they might just be looking for a short-term solution, if anything.
And that’s only if they are already done with the David Jiricek experiment or don’t want Nick Seeler to play all 84 games.
So, who can that even be? This hypothetical defenseman who would be better than anyone they have in the bottom half of their blue line but also wouldn’t be a long-term commitment or someone who would push aside the likes of Bonk or Gill — who?
What defensemen could the Flyers really target?
It would be weird for a team to just trade a defenseman off of their roster in the first few weeks of the season. Especially considering it would be a pretty solid defender if he were to be considered a step above someone like Seeler or even Ristolainen.
The only defenseman that fits that criteria and we know for sure is likely to be traded is Carolina Hurricanes’ Alexander Nikishin, but it doesn’t seem like the Flyers want to go down that path. With question marks around his game and the fact that he reportedly wants a five-year, $45-million contract as a restricted free agent, that will certainly turn the Flyers off. Even if it would be a solid get (and it would cost a lot in trade cost).
Maybe the Flyers are looking to just add depth in more of a literal sense. Someone like the Rangers’ Scott Morrow could be an interesting addition since he’s probably not a regular on that team and he can give Jiricek some competition as a young, right-handed, offensively minded defenseman.
We’re just grasping at straws here, in the end. There is really no defenseman that could easily fit this bill as “defensive depth” for the Flyers as the roster stands right now.
Maybe Ristolainen would head the other way in this hypothetical deal and the Flyers would be getting his exact replacement back but they’re just signed for multiple years instead of being a pending free agent. We don’t know!
If the Flyers really are already talking to teams about getting someone who could solidify their blue line, then it’s a great sign. If the roster stands pat and they’re in a playoff spot around the trade deadline, someone who could take away minutes from Ristolainen or Seeler and maybe be on the younger side, is certainly someone we could see the Flyers targeting.
