A season of struggle only gets worse for Sean Couturier, as he’ll miss tonight’s game against the Kings with an undisclosed upper-body injury, according to Rick Tocchet.
The Flyers captain has looked a step slower this season, only producing seven goals and 22 points throughout his 66 games, and being relegated to fourth line duties at five-on-five as of late. However, nothing about his performance against Anaheim on the first night of the Flyers’ west coast back-to-back suggested that he had suffered an injury. In fact, it was one of Couturier’s better games of late, and there was no specific play that seemed like it could have led to an obvious injury.
Sean Couturier out tonight (upper body). Sounds like there's some uncertainty in terms of how long it will be.

Tocchet: "I don't think it's long term, but I don't know."
He was uncharacteristically deployed primarily as a winger against the Ducks in his last game prior to being ruled out, with Luke Glendening centering his line. In hindsight, that could have been a hint towards a potential injury that prevented Couturier from taking face-offs, but it could also just be an attempt to try and kickstart the struggling forward with a positional shake-up. It is also important to mention that Couturier took the opening faceoff of the the 3-on-3 overtime period.
The loss of Couturier doesn’t mean as much as it would have in previous seasons, as his role has diminished significantly as the season has worn on, but he still averaged 16:23 of ice time over his last 20 game stretch. If Couturier was to miss a significant amount of time, Noah Cates would likely see a hefty uptick in playing time for the remainder of his absence. The aforementioned Glendening would also be locked in as the fourth line center, and Trevor Zegras could very well find himself practicing face-offs and seeing more time up the middle than was originally planned.
The penalty kill will be the unit that feels Couturier’s absence the most, but it will likely just result in more minutes for Cates and Christian Dvorak, with perhaps some Glendening sprinkled in.
For Couturier personally, his 2025-26 goes from bad to worse. In a year where he was already on pace for under 10 goals and his worst point total since his injury riddled 2021-22 campaign, Couturier will miss time coming off of one of his better efforts in recent memory. It’s hard to say definitively without knowing the full extent of his injury, but another knock was the last thing the Flyers captain needed right now. He’s been the topic of a lot of discussion recently, mostly surrounding the remaining four years on his contract and how it looks when compared to his ever-diminishing role. It remains to be seen how long he’ll be out for, but even if it is just a short-term absence, it’s just another blow to a player that was already scuffling to begin with.
