Flyers select Jack Murtagh with 40th overall pick in 2025 NHL Draft

The Philadelphia Flyers have selected Jack Murtagh out of the USNTDP who is a powerful, energetic winger with some skill and physicality.

After a flurry of trades that sent their picks around the second round, the Philadelphia Flyers selected energetic winger Jack Murtagh with the 40th overall pick of the 2025 NHL Draft.

Murtagh spent his entire draft year with the U.S. National Team Development Program, where he was able to score 22 goals and 53 points in 56 games for the program, and then seven goals and 18 points in 24 games for the USHL juniors side of the team. Murtagh also racked up the production at the U18 World Championships, scoring two goals and six points in seven games. He is committed to go to Boston University starting in the 2026-27 season.

The Elite Prospects 2025 Draft Guide had him ranked 28th and describes Murtagh’s game as a complete power wing:

“An explosive winger, Murtagh powers past – and through – opponents with explosive strides. If there’s a puck battle, he’s involved, throwing hits, digging under sticks, and popping right back up after getting knocked down. He sticks with every play and never gets deterred. The motor and speed make Murtagh a safe bet to become an NHLer in some capacity, and there’s plenty of upside to be had, too. Turning puck battles into chances, Murtagh always looks off the wall after winning possession. He powers through contact to unleash quick-release wristers with his feet moving. Though it didn’t appear as much, Murtagh’s explosive one-timer could be a power play-level weapon in the NHL with its power, precision, and ability to fire from a variety of positions. More than anything, it was Murtagh’s growth as a playmaker that cemented his first-round status.”

While Murtagh does not compare to some of the behemoths that the Flyers have drafted like 6-foot-5 Jack Nesbitt or 6-foot-6 Carter Amico, the East Greenbush, NY native is a whopping 198 pounds with his 6-foot-1 frame. He is a truck and he could grow even further considering his late birthday. Much like Jett Luchanko, Murtagh is an August birthday and if he was born less than one month later, he would be a prospect for the 2026 NHL Draft instead.

The Flyers are betting high on his upside as an all-around, energetic player on the wing to perfectly complement some of the more soft skill that they have in the pipeline already.

Philadelphia has picks No. 48 and No. 57 in the second round, and then pick again with two selections in the fifth round and one in the sixth to round out the day.
