Before the season began, Philadelphia Flyers general manager Danny Briere was emphatic. He wasn’t completely putting his head in the sand like an ostrich and guaranteeing the Flyers were going to be in the hunt for a playoff spot. But the inference was obvious: the Flyers had added pieces in the off-season that were supposed to put them in a better position for playing playoff hockey. Or at the very least being in a similar position they were in back in the final days of 2023-24: not quite on the inside with a spot but at least having a puncher’s chance of maybe squeaking in after game 82 with a bit of puck luck and some scoreboard watching. It wasn’t the ultimate goal, as Briere wanted a lengthy stretch of seasons where Philadelphia resembled the likes of Tampa Bay, Las Vegas, and Florida. But he did hope the Flyers would at least get to experience some playoff hockey this season.
