It was beginning to look like the Philadelphia Flyers weren’t going to made a trade on this year’s deadline day. However, in the minutes leading up to the 3 P.M. deadline, the Flyers sent defenseman Erik Gustafsson to the Montreal Canadiens for a 2022 7th round draft pick.
For a 7th RD pick in ’22. And Flyers retain 50 percent salary/AAV
So Gustafsson to Montreal for a 7th. https://t.co/KMlXjCzM8D— Pierre LeBrun (@PierreVLeBrun) April 12, 2021
Gustafsson, who signed a one-year deal worth $3,000,000 in the off-season had fallen out of favor with the Flyers, sitting out as a healthy scratch in eight of the team’s previous nine games. The Flyers retained 50 percent of his remaining cap hit, which is really not a big deal, as the contract is set to expire at the end of the season.
After jump-starting the power play in the first week of the season, Gustafsson never seemed to get settled within the Flyers’ system, and the writing had been on the wall for a while now; the Flyers and Gustafsson were no longer a match. For Montreal, they add depth for essentially nothing after losing Victor Mete on waivers earlier today. And thus, the tradition of the Flyers acquiring Montreal’s seventh round draft pick continues.
Update (4/12/21 4:13 P.M.): the tradition does not continue, it is the St. Louis Blues’ 2022 seventh round draft pick.
Gustafsson appeared in 24 games with the Flyers, scoring a goal and picking up nine assists.
