Between being left off of the Canadian Olympic team following his appearance at the 4 Nations Face-Off tournament last year and playing for a team that seems destined to miss the playoffs once again, Philadelphia Flyers winger Travis Konecny hasn’t had much go his way this year.
Following the Flyers’ 6-3 loss to the Bruins last week that stretched their losing streak to three, Konecny voiced his frustration at the fact that his squad seemed to be fading out of the playoff picture once again.

“I mean, it’s frustrating because I’ve been through this so many times. I just want to make the playoffs. That’s kind of all I look at right now,” Konecny said. “Just try to get points for the team. We need to figure something out.”
Combine that with not really ever being in consideration to represent his country, and Konecny would have had every excuse to be discouraged and start slowing down along with the rest of the team around him.
But instead of slowing down into the Olympic break, Konecny has played some of the best hockey of his career, and looked like the best player in the lineup night in, and night out. Over the past 20 games, Konecny has put up 12 goals and 24 points, far exceeding anyone else on the roster in that timeframe, and putting himself back on a point per game pace following a sub-par start.
But even the impressive raw numbers don’t fully illustrate just how important TK has been to keeping his squad above water during this recent stretch.
His two breakaway goals against Vegas in mid-January essentially carried the Flyers to a narrow 2-1 win, and broke the proceeding five game losing streak. He later tallied a hat trick against the Blue Jackets nine days later, essentially providing the entire offense in a 5-3 loss where the team just didn’t bring it whatsoever.
But maybe the most impressive segment of Konecny’s season is happening right now. As the Flyers scrap for their playoff lives heading into an extended break, Konecny has left it all on the table. Including the hat trick against the Blue Jackets, Konecny has amassed five goals and nine points over the past four games, and provided the sort of dynamic and chaotic offensive zone play that the Flyers have sorely lacked at times throughout the season.
Despite once again playing on a power play unit that seems incapable of generating any sort of offense, and playing with a rotating cast of average centermen, Konecny has persevered and continued to lead the way offensively, even as the team around him struggles to maintain their form.
Konecny unfortunately sits in a spot where his best is not good enough to materially change the situation that his team finds himself in. The Flyers have 19 goals in their past six games. Konecny has a hand in over half of them.
There have been a lot of things to complain about in Philadelphia over the past month, but you’d be hard pressed to find anyone right now who has a bad word to say about Travis Konecny.
