For Flyers to nail a competitive rebuild, look to the Stars

From the moment Danny Briere took over as general manager of the Philadelphia Flyers and kickstarted the rebuild, he had one clear, succinct message:

We are not going to tank.

The Flyers, both the front office and the team, have made good on that promise. Not tanking has left some fans with a bitter taste in their mouth: how is the team supposed to get high-end, elite talent if it’s not picking at the top of the draft for a few consecutive years? The bad news for those fans is that, like it or not, this team’s right in the playoff mix again, same as last year–and this “competitive rebuild” could severely limit the ceiling of the next contending Flyers team.

The good news is, a competitive rebuild isn’t impossible. In fact, one of the better teams in the league has executed it pretty well: the Dallas Stars.
