Flyers winger Garnet Hathaway was announced today as the team’s nominee for the King Clancy Memorial Trophy.

The Trophy is awarded to the player who “best exemplifies leadership qualities on and off the ice and makes a noteworthy humanitarian contribution to his community.”

“It’s an incredible honor to be recognized for this award, but the real reward comes from the connections Lindsay and I have made with first responders and their families,” Hathaway said in a statement. “Their sacrifices and dedication inspire me every day, and through Hath’s Heroes, I hope to continue supporting and giving back to those who serve our community. I’m grateful for the Flyers organization, my teammates, and the incredible fans who have supported these efforts.”

Hathaway has led a few community initiatives since arriving in Philadelphia two seasons ago. Topping the list is Hath’s Heroes, an organization he launched during his days as a Washington Capital and has since seen blossom in Philadelphia. The organization is aimed at helping first responders and their families, whether it’s through finacial help or overall physical and mental well-being.

The winger, who missed time earlier this season from a concussion, has 10 goals and 11 helpers for 21 points, his highest offensive output since 2021-22 when he put up 26 points for Washington. Hathaway recently played his 600th NHL game.

Each team nominates one playerr for the King Clancy Memorial Trophy with a committee of NHL executives led by Commissionere Gary Bettman as well as former winners of the award and the NHL Foundation Player award making the decision. The Trophy comes with a $25,000 donation to the charity of the winner’s choice and an NHL grant of up to $20,000 to “help organize a special activation related to his humanitarian cause.”

The trophy is named after Francis M. “King” Clancy, a former Maple Leafs and Senators (the original 1920s Ottawa Senators era) who went on to become a head coach and general manager for the Maple Leafs over his illustrious career. Clancy died in 1986. The first Trophy in his honor was awarded in 1988.

Other nominees this year include Washington’s Tom Wilson, Carolina’s Jordan Staal, and Utah’s Alex Kerfoot among others. No Flyer has ever won the Trophy but three former Flyers have won it with other teams: Vincent Lecavalier in 2007-08 with the Lightning, Dave Poulin in 1992-93 with the Bruins, and Shjon Podein with the Avalanche in 2000-01. Last year’s winner was Anders Lee of the New York Islanders.
