Give ’em the mic: picking karaoke songs for Flyers players

It’s the holiday season, and celebrations abound. Who doesn’t love firing up a microphone and belting some karaoke with their friends and family? Sure, there are any number of bars you could perform in (hello, Bob & Barbara’s), but there’s something about slugging some bevs and plugging some tunes with your chosen family that just hits different. In that spirit, we’ve decided to hand out karaoke songs for each player, though some are gathering ’round for a duet or group performance. Tunes were selected based on vibes, mostly, but a few choices are rooted in what we know about a couple of the Flyers. How’d we do?

“Fight For Your Right” – Beastie Boys: Nick Seeler, Nic Deslauriers, Garnet Hathaway

What better song for the team’s three toughest guys and most frequent brawlers? The real discussion is about which would be Mike D, MCA or Ad-Rock–let us know in the comments which Flyer you think would be which Beastie Boy.

“Doin’ Time” – Sublime: Joel Farabee

Farabee probably enjoys Sublime, right?

“Boom” – P.O.D.: Rasmus Ristolainen and Emil Andrae

The European Bash Bros. would absolutely smash this one.

“Espresso” – Sabrina Carpenter: Sam Ersson

He already knows the tune!

“Apple” – Charli XCX: Cam York

By the same token, York already has this song down.

“Tubthumping” – Chumbawamba: Morgan Frost

Frost would relish the opportunity to scream-sing, “I get knocked down / But I get up again / You’re never gonna keep me down,” right in Torts’s face.

“Under the Bridge” – Red Hot Chili Peppers: Jamie Drysdale

Our former Cali boy would absolutely have to pay homage to his one-time home.

“Wagon Wheel” – Darius Rucker: Travis Konecny & Travis Sanheim

TK would be belting this one with all his heart, and Sanheim would just be standing like a statue with the second mic and kinda muttering along to the chorus. The rest of the boys would have their phone flashlights out and wavin’.

“Baker Street” – Gerry Rafferty: Scott Laughton

It is well known that Scott Laughton loves a good saxophone (last season’s Squirtle sax song being a prime example), and this one’s probably the ultimate sax track. He’d be air saxophoning like a champ. Could also see our LGBTQ ally belting “Run Away With Me” by Carly Rae Jepsen, which has a slick sax solo, too.

“Dancing On My Own” – Robyn: Matvei Michkov & Egor Zamula

Michkov has already established himself as a Philadelphia sports icon, and he surely watched the Philadelphia Phillies playoff runs in Russia and already knows the words. He even threw out a first pitch! His bff Zamula, who’s been here for those Phillies runs, could probably lend a hand if the English gets away from him.

“Sky Full Of Stars” – Coldplay: Aleksei Kolosov & Ivan Fedotov

This one’s tough because I don’t know any Russian songs, nor what pop songs might be big in Russia and Belarus. Coldplay’s pretty crowd friendly, so maybe Kolosov and Fedotov can handle this one as a duet with the boys screaming along in the background.

“Jack & Diane” – John Mellencamp: Sean Couturier

Coots seems like he would have a Mellencamp song or two in his back pocket.

“In the End” – Linkin Park: Tyson Foerster & Owen Tippett

This one’s tricky, but Tippett probably knows the chorus (RIP Chester) and Foerster’s gonna do the rap verses. We love numetal at karaoke nights and these two seem the most likely to knock this one out.

“Mr. Brightside” – The Killers: Bobby Brink

Bob-o seems like the kinda guy to have the cheerful energy to channel this classic and get the entire team into it. Plus, given the struggles he’s had with the coach, Brink’s had no choice but to look on the bright side.

“How You Remind Me” – Nickelback: Ryan Poehling & Noah Cates

They just seem like they’d be solid doing a Nickelback song together.

“Don’t Stop Believin'” – Journey: Erik Johnson

Of course the Old Man is gonna do Journey. Plus, as resident Professional Best Friend, EJ’s contractually obligated to tell his teammates they can’t stop believing, and it’d make a fitting finale for Flyers karaoke night.

BONUS! “I’ll Make a Man Out Of You” – from Mulan: John Tortorella, Brad Shaw, Rocky Thompson

There’s no way in hell these three coaches know this song, but my goodness is it an apt karaoke choice.
