Joel Farabee suspended three games

Philadelphia Flyers forward Joel Farabee has been suspended three games for a hit on Winnipeg Jets forward Mathieu Perreault. He was assessed a five-minute major and a game misconduct for the hit in the game.

It’s a late hit, and the type of hit that the league is looking to take out of the game. It’s not a hockey play. Still, three games for a rookie’s first offense seems a bit harsh. If this was the standard that the league actually held its players to, there’d be little to no issue with the ruling. But that’s not believable, given some of the other punishments handed out so far this season.

In the short term, this puts the Flyers in a tough spot. With just eleven forwards ready to play on the roster, and without the cap space to call someone up, they may turn to an eleven forward, seven defensemen lineup. If they choose not to, they could send Philippe Myers — the lone waiver-exempt defenseman on the active roster — to the Lehigh Valley Phantoms, and recall a forward in a corresponding move.

Farabee will miss contests versus the Anaheim Ducks, Buffalo Sabres, and Ottawa Senators. He will be eligible to return to the lineup next Monday, when the Flyers take on the New York Rangers.
