Mika Cyr invited to Philadelphia Flyers’ Development Camp

According to the hockey player representation firm Propulsion, forward Mika Cyr has been invited to the Philadelphia Flyers’ development camp. Cyr is a 5’9”, 174-pound forward who has spent time in each of the last four seasons with the Moncton Wildcats in the QMJHL. Cyr was first eligible to be drafted in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft, but he has been passed over in each of the last three drafts.

Cyr appeared in one game for Moncton during the 2015-16 season before he produced ten goals and 11 apples for 21 points in 35 games for the club the next year. He’s been an alternate captain with the Wildcats for the last two seasons, as he accrued 21 goals and 40 points in 44 tilts last season and increased those totals to 28 goals and 67 points in 66 appearances this season. Cyr also finished second in postseason scoring for the Wildcats with five goals and six helpers for 11 points in 11 contests as Moncton was swept in the second round of the QMJHL playoffs by the Halifax Mooseheads.

It’s not too hard to figure out why Cyr went undrafted. For a league that still has general managers saying these types of things, the fact Cyr is 5’9” is probably the main reason why teams didn’t feel confident investing a pick in him. He didn’t produce a ton in his draft year or the following year (which also played a role in him going undrafted), but it’s a lot easier to sell a forward that doesn’t throw up points as defensively responsible if they are above 6’0” and playing in the OHL or NCAA compared to a player in the Q under 5’10”.

It might not be the most exciting news, but no one knows which players will or will not thrive in the NHL one day. Like Ron Hextall did with Phil Myers (and hopefully Yegor Zamula) perhaps Fletcher just found a young prospect outside of the NHL draft that will one day be an NHLer.
