NHL Draft 2016: Philadelphia Flyers select goalie Carter Hart with 48th pick

BUFFALO — With the 48th pick in the 2016 NHL Draft, the Philadelphia Flyers have selected Carter Hart of the Everett Silvertips in the WHL. Hart was the first goalie chosen by any team in the entire 2016 draft.

This was the Flyers’ original second round pick. They also picked with the 36th overall pick and they still hold the 52nd overall pick in this round.

Hart was the winner of the 2015-16 Del Wilson Trophy, which goes to the top goaltender in the WHL. Hart posted a .918 save percentage for Everett in 63 games.

Here’s what the folks at Future Considerations have to say about the 6’1″, 170-pound netminder, who they ranked as the draft’s top goaltender:

Hart is a very mature, fuid and athletic goalie who moves seamlessly through his crease. He does not have an overly imposing frame, but his ability to effortlessly slide through the crease makes him tough to beat under any circumstance. He energetically follows the play, maintaining excellent position while tracking the puck and remaining in a strong stance from which he can quickly and powerfully push off to cover lateral space. He looks very confdent and does not seem to waver in his focus at any point. While Hart tracks the play and keeps good angles, there are times when he does cheat a little bit while playing the percentages. When on his knees in the butterfy, he relies on athleticism and instinct to throw his body at high pucks. As he doesn’t have the natural size to simply let high shots hit him when he is in the butterfy, he drops down to his knees, then almost immediately jumps up to take away high shots around his head and shoulders. He does not show any spectacular puckhandling ability—like springing forwards with a heady pass or trying to fake forecheckers—but Hart can come out and stop pucks, setting them up for his defenders or moving the puck away from a dangerous forecheck. He isn’t the biggest goalie around, but he has great poise and he regularly makes tough saves when his team needs him most. In doing so, he creates confdence throughout his team in front of him, and that is refected in his confdent, focused demeanor.

ESPN’s Corey Pronman also had Hart as his top goalie:

Hart been outstanding in the WHL for the last two years. The WHL Goalie of the Year is a former eighth-round pick in his bantam draft who has flourished the last few seasons. Hart’s hockey sense drives his value. His knowledge of how to read the game and anticipate pucks and his proper positioning in the net, is high-end. Any scout you talk to about Hart comes back talking about how easy he makes it look, and how he never gets out of his technique on tough saves. His athleticism is fine. He moves around at a solid level, and has an above-average glove hand, but he doesn’t have that explosive element in his game. Hart plays the odds more than taking away goals, and he does it very well.

Hart spoke with the media here in Buffalo and here’s what he had to say:
