Flyers goaltender Sam Ersson was officially named to Team Sweden’s roster for the World Hockey Championship which begins later this week in Ersson’s homeland of Stockholm and also in Herning, Denmark. The two countries are co-hosting this year’s competition.

It marks the third time since 2019 Ersson has represented his country in international play. Earlier this year he was with Sweden in the Four Nations Face-Off. Ersson was impressive in a 2-1 win for Sweden over the U.S., stopping 31 stops and handing the U.S. their first loss of the tournament. Previous to that, Ersson played four games representing his country in the World Junior Championships in 2018-19, playing four games. He went 3-1 in those games, ending up with a 2.23 goals-against average and a strong .922 save percentage.
With any luck two things happen for Ersson in this competition. The first is he remains healthy and doesn’t sustain an injury that could set him back for the Flyers 2025-26 season, throwing the already problematic goaltending situation into more chaos. Secondly, a strong showing against some of the NHL’s finest (not in the Stanley Cup playoffs) could give the beleagured keeper a bit of confidence going into the summer, getting him off on the right foot when training camp rolls around in September.
So far Ersson joins Travis Sanheim, Travis Konecny, and Tyson Foerster as the Flyers who are also participating in the tournament. The trio of skaters were named to Team Canada’s roster last week, a roster that will now see Marc-Andre Fleury, Sidney Crosby, and Nathan MacKinnon who were recently added Monday.
Sweden begins their tournament against Slovakia on May 9 while Canada opens their schedule against Slovenia on May 10. Sweden and Canada face off against each other on May 20. Those four aforementioned teams are in Group A alongside Finland, Latvia, Austria, and France. Group B includes Czechia, the U.S., Switzerland, Germany, Denmark, Norway, Hungary and Kazakhstan. The tournament concludes with the gold medal game on May 25.
