Flyers provide injury update on goaltender Sam Ersson

It’s a brand new calendar year, and the Flyers are back with a brand new piece of injury news. Flyers General Manager Danny Briere provided an update on goaltender Sam Ersson this evening, who’s officially out day-to-day with a lower-body injury.

This injury came, one would assume, as a result of a play in the second period of last night’s game in San Jose, when Ersson was run into by Sharks forward Luke Kunin, and he did not return to the game for the third period, and was replaced by Aleksei Kolosov for the final frame.

And on the one hand, it feels like good news that they’ve seemingly avoided any kind of major injury, with the day-to-day designation being something of a best case scenario. But, on the other hand, this also marks the third lower-body injury that has beset Ersson in the first half of this season (it’s not been confirmed though if this is a new injury or a reaggravation of the old injury), and this fact does feel a bit concerning.

And then on… the other hand again… an injury to one of their goaltenders isn’t bad news for the Flyers, in some ways, as it means that they can kick the can down the road a little bit further, as it relates to making a decision on the goaltending situation at large. They’ve been rolling with three goaltenders on the roster for a good bit now, but the situation’s becoming increasingly untenable — the rotation is beginning to skew, and Ivan Fedotov has been looking like the odd man out at the moment, but there have been no moves made to either send him down or move Kolosov back down in order to clear up space and get Fedotov more reps. The Flyers are going to have to figure out what they’re doing here eventually, as they’re doing all parties a bit of a disservice, but they’ve been afforded a little bit more time to figure everything out.
