When Nick Seeler was waived and subsequently released by the Chicago Blackhawks in January of 2021, his NHL career hanged in the balance. Refusing an AHL assignment, Seeler found himself a free agent for the remainder of the season, without a contract or an organization to call home.
July 1 came and went, and Seeler still found himself without an opportunity, it wasn’t until late in the month when the Flyers approached his agent Pat Brisson, and signed the defenseman to a one-year, two-way contract, likely due to the fact that the Flyers were at that point being run by the same general manager that signed Seeler to his entry level contract, Chuck Fletcher.
Fast forward to today, and there were few that would’ve thought that the now 31-year old defender would mean so much to a budding Flyers team. Seeler has revitalized his game, turning into a dedicated, stay-at-home defensive rock, who is key in allowing the Flyers’ D-core to reach their full potential. A fearless blueliner who was fifth in the league in blocked shots despite missing 11 games, Seeler brings the fierce competitive spirit that drives John Tortorella’s team when they’re at their best.
