The Philadelphia Flyers made the biggest move they could at this year’s NHL trade deadline. As they continue down their own rebuilding journey, they shipped out longtime veteran forward Scott Laughton to the Toronto Maple Leafs. In exchange, they got a first-round pick but that’s not what we’re going to focus on here.
In addition to the future draft selection, the Flyers acquired 21-year-old winger Nikita Grebenkin from the Leafs organization.
The young Russian forward was selected in the fifth round of the 2022 NHL Draft at 135th overall but has quickly rocketed out of the typical projected for a late-round pick and established himself as a force overseas. He was busy playing in the MHL during his draft year, but the following season was able to be loaned to a lesser KHL club for a larger opportunity and seized it. He scored nine goals and 26 points in 45 games of his rookie KHL season — not bad whatsoever.
