Flyers acquire Trevor Zegras from Ducks for not a whole lot

The Philadelphia Flyers have acquired forward Trevor Zegras from the Anaheim Ducks and they did not have to give up a whole lot to do it.

The Philadelphia Flyers have made their first of possibly many trades this offseason and it could be for what is their number-one center.

According to multiple reports, the Flyers have acquired forward Trevor Zegras from the Anaheim Ducks. No other details have been provided, but Philadelphia is getting the ultra-skilled forward from the Southern California club.

Reportedly, the Flyers are sending back to Anaheim, center Ryan Poehling, the 45th overall pick of this year’s draft this weekend, and a 2026 fourth-round pick.

Aside from the decent second-round selection for this year’s draft class and a more-than-capable fourth-line center in Poehling, the Flyers are giving up nothing of true high-end value for a player that can make up more than that.

Zegras has one year left on his contract that carries a $5.75-million AAV and will be a restricted free agent next summer, before he eventually hits unrestricted free agency in 2028.

The 24-year-old forward has been linked to the Flyers for several different times over the last couple of years his name has been in trade rumors. It seemed like almost every single month there would be a quick mention of the Ducks trading Zegras to a different team, but it never ended up in an actual transaction. Now, the Flyers are the team that could potentially unlock even more in the young forward and they are betting on his high-end skill.

Zegras entered the NHL as the new hot prospect. He razzled and dazzled with multiple Michigan goal attempts, and famously made headlines with teammate Sonny Milano to have the alley-oop goal that would be seen on SportsCenter for weeks. In his first two full NHL seasons, Zegras scored 46 goals and 126 points in back-to-back campaigns where he earned at least 60 points.

Since then, though, he has had some injury troubles and setbacks. Zegras was able to play just 31 games in the 2023-24 season, scoring a measly 15 points, and just last season, appeared in just 57 games where he managed to score 32 points.

The Flyers are making a low-cost bet on a player being what he has done before. There are questions on whether Zegras can stick down the middle — considering he has a career 40.1 faceoff percentage — but for now, he is the most skilled option they have at center by a country mile.

Is it going to be the Summer of Danny?
