Philadelphia Flyers prospect Porter Martone is heading to the Michigan State Spartans, being one of the top players this year to go from the Canadian Hockey League and take the upwards developmental step to play college hockey. And according to one prospect expert, he could have a monster season and write his name in the NCAA record books.

After being one of the best players in the OHL with 37 goals and 98 total points while captaining the Brampton Steelheads, Martone was selected by the Flyers at sixth overall of the 2025 NHL Draft just a few months ago. While it appeared he thought about trying to make the NHL immediately, he made the smart decision to take the smaller step forward and head to college hockey. And apparently, is about to have one of the best seasons ever as a freshman.

On the latest episode of Called Up: The Hockey Prospect Podcast, Elite Prospects’ own Cam Robinson and FloHockey’s Chris Peters were doing an exercise trying to predict the point totals for incoming Draft+1 players who are coming into the NCAA from their respective junior leagues this season. And Martone was obviously the first player they mentioned and immediately gave a bold, historic prediction.

“He is a very fascinating player. Him in college hockey should be fascinating as well,” Peters said. “The guy that I kind of looked at, and now Porter’s bigger than this player but positionally similar in terms of overall offensive attributes — Ryan Leonard in his Draft+1 season as a freshman at Boston College had 60 points. … So Porter Martone, can he hit 60 with the Michigan State Spartans this year, over or under?

The answer came almost immediate after just thinking for a moment what type of talent the Flyers prospect will be surrounded by and if he can lead them up top.

“They’re going to be a wagon. That team’s going to put up some points this year and Porter’s going to be playing a big role in that too,” Robinson said. “He’s getting front line minutes, first power-play minutes. You know what? Give me the over. Give me the over on Porter Martone.

“And that’s a swing because goddamn, getting 60 points as a first year in the NCAA is no easy feat, but I like this kid. He knows how to score. He knows how to set it up. He’s got the body to step into that league. I’m going just a hair over.”

Peters was a little bit more hesitant, technically going with the under but still tipped Martone for around 55 points and noted that he can “feast” on some of the weaker schools while also being a key player to bring offensive against the Spartans’ toughest competition.

Either way, they are both predicting Porter Martone to have a historic season as a Draft+1 player in college hockey and for him to be among the best one-and-done players to ever do it.

Since 2005, there have been only two players to score over 60 points, a feat that, as we just mentioned, a person who is very smart about hockey just predicted the Flyers prospect to get to. Those players are Wininpeg Jets’ Kyle Connor and San Jose Sharks’ Will Smith.

Connor, while playing on a historically good University of Michigan team during the 2015-16 season, with the likes of J.T. Compher, Tyler Motte, and a guy named Zach Werenski, was able to score 35 goals and 71 points, a point total you would have to go all the way back to the mid-1980s for a player his age to have hit. Meanwhile Smith was on an even stronger Boston College team with Cutter Gauthier (ew), Ryan Leonard, and Gabe Perrault back in the 2023-24 season, when he was able to score 25 goals and match Connor’s 71 points.

And even if we want to stretch the timeline to before the 2004-05 NHL lockout, where the sport of hockey was slightly different than it was today, you get the likes of Thomas Vanek and his 62 points, Michael Cammalleri scoring 61, and Zach Parise scoring 61 as well. All of these players lighting it up after they were drafted have gone on to have incredible careers.

To really hit the point home, there are a few players who scored exactly 60 points in their Draft+1 season, too. Ryan Leonard and Gabe Perrault both hit 60 points on that aforementioned Boston College team with Will Smith, and then we have Brock Boeser and Logan Cooley both hitting that point total as well.

Basically, no matter what if Martone hits the 60-point milestone he would have one of the best seasons in college hockey history and at the very least, be poised to either have a very good NHL career or be one of the best prospects on the planet (if he isn’t already considered that).
