Philadelphia Flyers center Trevor Zegras is just over a week into his first training camp with his new team. And so far, he’s been the life of the practices and making people laugh, smile, or just look confused.
Whether it’s been practicing with Matvei Michkov long after the rest have left the ice, or giving head coach Rick Tocchet his own nickname, Zegras has been a bright spot and a breath of fresh air. Given how gregarious and upbeat Zegras has been so far, it’s almost impossible to think Zegras and former coach John Tortorella in the same area code much less sharing the same locker room and bench. Thankfully we don’t have to.
Given his contract status, and knowing this is a one-year test run for him to prove himself to the Flyers, some might have thought Zegras would be coming into training camp on edge. Gripping his stick a bit tighter, giving rather boring “pucks in deep” answers to the standard questions posed and simply not trying to stand out. Yet so far, he’s been anything but. Here then is a handful of clips featuring Zegras, some of them showing his talent, some showing his lighter side, and some showing a bit of both.
Zegras vs Michkov: who is better in goal?
On Thursday, Zegras and Michkov were on the ice and decided to play some one-on-one, each taking a turn playing goal. With a few looking on, Michkov skated down and tried to beat Zegras. Zegras made the save. Then they changed places, with Michkov looking like he was going to stack his legs but then looked like he was making a snow angel. Zegras 1, Michkov 0. We’ll let you figure out how it all ended. Fortunately, no injuries took place during the contest.

Zegras shows Foerster some love
On Wednesday, when Tyson Foerster was wearing a jersey indicating he was ready for contact, Zegras went over to the winger and showed his appreciation at the news. Zegras didn’t spend the entire practice shadowing Foerster this close, but Foerster seemed to laugh it off.

More of Zegras and Michkov after practice
The duo were still working together, whether it was trick shots or stickhandling or simply getting a feel for how the other works on the ice. The reps both are getting with each other can only help heading into the season. There will be some bumps in the road obviously as they figure things out. It’s a good sign that they are putting the work in together.

Taco
Tocchet said he thought Zegras’ personality was “great” and he’s a “good kid.” He probably didn’t expect the nickname he gave the head coach earlier this week. It didn’t seem to rub Tocchet the wrong way which is the main thing.

Zegras gets the Mad Russian to do pushups
After helping Michkov try to improve his faceoff skills, Zegras won the little drill which left the loser needing to do some pushups. Despite the language barrier, Zegras kept pointing to the ice where Michkov dropped and did his pushups before the next drill, much to the amusement of onlookers and some fellow Flyers.

While these are a few examples are what Zegras has done to change the mood of the team, it’s probably a given that he’ll continue to do the same throughout the season. It almost makes one wonder if Zegras would be in a Flyers uniform if no coaching change was made last March. Regardless, a happy Zegras may be a productive Zegras which should bode well for the Flyers when the games really do count.
