Scott Laughton remains ‘best fit’ for Leafs as list of reported suitors grows

The Toronto Maple Leafs remain focused on Scott Laughton while a few other Eastern Conference teams have entered the conversation.

Scott Laughton is once again a hot commodity at the NHL trade deadline and it looks more and more like the Philadelphia Flyers may finally move him. The NHL trade rumors continue to swirl around Laughton with the trade deadline less than 10 days away.

On Tuesday night’s edition of Insider Trading, TSN’s Darren Dreger reported on the Toronto Maples Leafs’ interest in former Flyer Brayden Schenn along with Laughton as trade targets.

“You also have Scotty Laughton of the Philadelphia Flyers. The ask is a little bit less, it’s a first-round draft pick or an equal-value prospect,” Dreger said, “unless Philadelphia has to take a player or a contract back and then it’s a first-plus. So two great options for the Leafs.”

The price for Laughton of a first-round pick or equivalent has been well publicized by now.

Danny Briere may look to take a contract back to improve the return as he did last year with the Sean Walker trade and Ryan Johansen. The name that jumps out on the Leafs is center David Kampf, who has a 10-team no-trade list and a $2.4 million cap hit through the end of the 2026-27 season.

If Kampf is in fact who the Leafs may try to dump on the Flyers, perhaps they could look for Toronto’s first-round pick in 2026 (they don’t have one this year) along with a prospect. The Flyers reportedly asked for Fraser Minten in return for Laughton within the past month but that didn’t go anywhere.

While the Leafs look like one of the primary potential destinations for Laughton, the list of reported suitors continues to grow. The Fourth Period’s Anthony DiMarco reported on Wednesday that the New Jersey Devils and Ottawa Senators have surfaced in the Laughton trade rumors.

There are now at least seven teams interested in Laughton including the Maple Leafs, Winnipeg Jets, now the Devils and Senators, and three unnamed teams.

It’s going to be an interesting final week leading up to the trade deadline. It sure seems like Laughton or Rasmus Ristolainen could get moved, but the Flyers ultimately could stand pat given the contract situation heading into the offseason when teams are more willing to shake up their roster.

We discussed potential landing spots for Laughton on the Broad Street Hockey YouTube channel on Tuesday:
