Welcome to BSH’s weekly prospect update, where we will be serving up stats and insight on what our homegrown players have been up to. This will include prospects in Canadian Juniors (BCHL, OHL, QMJHL & WHL), Europe (SHL, KHL), and NCAA college hockey. Notable Canadian junior performers this week:
Jay O’Brien (C), Penticton Vees (BCHL)
2018 1st Round Pick, 19th overall
Jay O’Brien is NOT a prospect this week. The 20 year old has 42 points (15 G, 27 A) in 29 games.
Mason Millman (D), Saginaw Spirit (OHL)
2019 4th Round Pick, 103rd overall
Millman’s dry-spell on offense continues as he only has two points (both assists) in his last eight games. The 2nd year OHLer has 11 points (5 G, 6 A) in 23 games this season.
Yegor Serdyuk (RW), Victoriaville Tigres (QMJHL)
2019 6th Round Pick, 165th overall
Make that two straight weeks out of the lineup for Serdyuk. He last played on 11/10.
Wyatte Wylie (D), Everett Silvertips (WHL)
2018 5th Round Pick, 127th overall
Wylie’s 6th and 7th goals of the season were at 5-on-5 and the powerplay, respectively. The talented D-man has 22 points in 22 games this season, putting him 5th among all WHL defensemen in scoring.
Egor Zamula (D), Calgary Hitmen (WHL)
Undrafted Free Agent
The points just keep coming for Zamula who now has 23 points (6 G, 17 A) in 22 games, putting him in 4th in WHL scoring among defensemen.
Roddy Ross (G), Seattle Thunderbirds (WHL)
2019 6th Round Pick, 169th overall
- 11/22 – 3 GA, 26 saves/
Ross only made it into one of the three games for Seattle this week. He has struggled mightily at times this season and holds a .909 SV% through 17 games. A far cry from his .919 SV% in his draft year.
Notable European performers this week:
Linus Högberg (D), Växjö Lakers HC (SHL)
2016 5th Round Pick, 139th overall
The Hog oddly getting 3rd pairing minutes this past week after getting mostly 2nd pairing minutes a majority of this season. Something to keep an eye on.
Olle Lycksell (RW/C), Linköping HC (SHL)
2017 6th Round Pick, 168th overall
Another uneven week for Lycksell, though he has still been fantastic overall with 12 points (3 G, 9 A) in 20 games.
Samuel Ersson (G), Brynäs IF (SHL)
2018 5th Round Pick, 143rd overall
- 11/23 – 0 GA, 25 saves/
Ersson finally gets back in a game and earns his first SHL shutout! It’s been an up and down season for the SHL rookie. Ersson has a .889 SV% in eight games.
Marcus Westfält (C), Västerviks IK (Allsvenskan)
2018 7th Round Pick, 205th overall
Marcus Westfält has three points (a goal and two assists) in 23 games.
Adam Ginning (D), HC Vita Hästen (Allsvenskan)
2018 2nd Round Pick, 50th overall
Ginning has been struggling and has now been loaned to Vita Hasten of the Allsvenskan League. In eleven games so far he has produced four assists.
David Bernhardt (D), SaiPa (Liiga)
2016 7th Round Pick, 199th overall
Since transferring to Liiga, Bernhardt has been held scoreless through five games.
Ivan Fedotov (G), Traktor Chelyabinsk (KHL)
2015 7th Round Pick, 188th overall
The 22 year old has a .927 SV% in 14 games this season in the KHL. That ranks him 20th among KHL goaltenders.
Notable collegiate performers this week:
Bobby Brink (RW), University of Denver
2019 2nd Round Pick, 34th overall
Huge weekend for Brink whose team split the weekend series with a Wade Allison/Ronnie Attard-less Western Michigan. The freshman has 11 points (6 G, 5 A) in 14 games thus far. That is fourth among freshman scorers behind Cole Caufield (16), Alex Turcotte (15) and Trevor Zegras (13). The kid has a nice shot and positions himself well.
Wade Allison (RW), Western Michigan University
2016 2nd Round Pick, 52nd overall
As mentioned previously, Allison sat out both games this weekend with an undisclosed injury. Looking like a lost season already for the once promising power-forward prospect. How quickly we pivot from “will he sign an ELC?” to “will the Flyers even WANT to sign him to an ELC?”.
Tanner Laczynski (C), Ohio State University
2016 6th Round Pick, 169th overall
Meanwhile, the Flyers should definitely make sure that Laczynski signs an entry-level contract once OSU season ends. The senior hasn’t lit it up quite as expected, but continues to produce offensively with 13 points (4 G, 9 A) in 12 games this season putting him just outside the Top 50 in NCAA scoring. Noah Cates (LW), University of Minnesota-Duluth
2017 5th Round Pick, 137th overall
Easily the best weekend of Cates brief collegiate career. The sophomore has 12 points (7 G, 5 A) in 12 games. He had just 23 points in 40 games last season. Something tells me he is going to surpass that. Check out some highlights here.
Bryce Brodzinski (RW), University of Minnesota
2019 7th Round Pick, 196th overall
Brodzinski scores his first collegiate goal! The freshman has four points in 14 games.
Gavin Hain (C), University of North Dakota
2018 6th Round Pick, 174th overall
Hain continues to struggle offensively and remains at three points (1 G, 2 A) through 12 games.
Cam York (D), University of Michigan
2019 1st Round Pick, 14th overall
York heeded my advice from last week and did some offense. His goal on Friday was his 2nd goal of the season. No word on why he sat out of Saturday’s game.
Wyatt Kalynuk (D), University of Wisconsin
2017 7th Round Pick, 196th overall
Kalynuk keeps racking up those assists. He has 10 of them and 12 points overall through 14 games. He is tied with seven other players for 5th most points among NCAA defensemen.
Ronnie Attard (D), Western Michigan University
2019 3rd Round Pick, 72nd overall
Attard sits out yet another weekend set of games with an undisclosed injury. The freshman has five points (4 G, 1 A) in 10 games.
Jack St. Ivany (D), Yale University
2018 4th Round Pick, 112nd overall
A quiet week for St. Ivany who has five points (all assists) in eight games this season.
