Flyers prospect report: Samuel Ersson and Jay O’Brien are this week’s top prospects

Welcome to BSH’s weekly prospect update, where we will be serving up stats and insight on what our homegrown players have been up to. This will include prospects in Canadian Juniors (BCHL, OHL, QMJHL & WHL), Europe (SHL, KHL), and NCAA college hockey. If you have any questions or suggestions, feel free to leave them in the comments.

Notable Canadian junior performers this week:

Jay O’Brien (C), Penticton Vees (BCHL)
2018 1st Round Pick, 19th overall

  • 10/23 – 1 goal, 1 assist, 4 PIM
  • 10/26 – 2 assists
  • 10/27 – 1 assist, 2 PIM/

Jay O’Brien breaks out of his mini-slump with a five-point week. He is up to 27 points (18 G, 9 A) in 18 games. More of that, please.

Mason Millman (D), Saginaw Spirit (OHL)
2019 4th Round Pick, 103rd overall

  • 10/25 – 2 shots
  • 10/26 – 0 shots
  • 10/27 – 2 goals, 1 assist, 3 shots/

An uneven, but still good week for Millman. Both goals were at 5-on-5 and the last was the eventual game-winner that put Saginaw ahead with less than three minutes remaining in the game.

Yegor Serdyuk (RW), Victoriaville Tigres (QMJHL)
2019 6th Round Pick, 165th overall

The offensive output sure has been on the downswing ever since coming back from that injury layoff. Though he has 11 points (8 G, 3 A) in 13 games, he has just one point in his last five games.

Wyatte Wylie (D), Everett Silvertips (WHL)
2018 5th Round Pick, 127th overall

  • 10/25 – 1 goal, 1 assist, 4 shots/

Wylie only had one game last week and certainly made the most of it. The soon to be 20 year old scored his third goal of the season and has 11 points in 12 games thus far.

Egor Zamula (D), Calgary Hitmen (WHL)
Undrafted Free Agent

No point-per-game week for Zamula? What is the meaning of this! Regardless, the impressive fourth year WHLer has 15 points (4 G, 11 A) in 12 games this season.

Roddy Ross (G), Seattle Thunderbirds (WHL)
2019 6th Round Pick, 169th overall

  • 10/22 – 1 GA, 24 saves
  • 10/25 – 4 GA, 32 saves
  • 10/28 – 1 GA, 33 saves/

An uneven, but still quite good week for Rowdy. The second year WHLer has a .917 SV% through his first 11 games.

Notable European performers this week:

Linus Högberg (D), Växjö Lakers HC (SHL)
2016 5th Round Pick, 139th overall

  • 10/24 – 1 shot, 2 PIM, 22:16 TOI
  • 10/26 – 2 assists, 2 shots, 18:35 TOI/

Points! The Hog has five points (1 G, 5 A) in 14 games this season. Just a reminder, this positive possession player had only 10 points in 52 games last year. He just keeps improving.

David Bernhardt (D), Växjö Lakers HC (SHL)
2016 7th Round Pick, 199th overall

That is now a couple weeks for Bernhardt out of the lineup with perhaps an undisclosed injury.

Olle Lycksell (RW/C), Linköping HC (SHL)
2017 6th Round Pick, 168th overall

  • 10/24 – 0 shots, 07:22 TOI
  • 10/26 – 1 assist, 14:13 TOI/

Another point for Lycksell gives him eight (3 G, 5 A) in 14 games.

Samuel Ersson (G), Brynäs IF (SHL)
2018 5th Round Pick, 143rd overall

  • 10/24 – 1 GA, 23 saves
  • 10/26 – 2 GA, 26 saves/

Goalie development isn’t linear (please remember this Flyers fans). Ersson has struggled this season, but put up a very good week. His SV% is up to .884 after six games and hopefully continues to trend upwards.

Marcus Westfält (C), Västerviks IK (Allsvenskan)
2018 7th Round Pick, 205th overall

Marcus Westfält has two points (a goal and assist) in 14 games.

Adam Ginning (D), HC Vita Hästen (Allsvenskan)
2018 2nd Round Pick, 50th overall

Ginning has been struggling and has now been loaned to Vita Hasten of the Allsvenskan League. In two games so far he has produced one assist.

Ivan Fedotov (G), Traktor Chelyabinsk (KHL)
2015 7th Round Pick, 188th overall

Fedotov continues to show that he belongs in the KHL. The 22 year old has a .933 SV% in 11 games this season.

Notable collegiate performers this week:

Bobby Brink (RW), University of Denver
2019 2nd Round Pick, 34th overall

No games for Denver this week, but are back in action this weekend against Boston College.

Wade Allison (RW), Western Michigan University
2016 2nd Round Pick, 52nd overall

Allison did not play in either game this weekend due to an undisclosed injury. The senior has one point (a goal) in his only four games this season.

Tanner Laczynski (C), Ohio State University
2016 6th Round Pick, 169th overall

  • 10/25 – 3 assists, 5 shots
  • 10/26 – 4 PIM, 4 shots/

Not a terrible weekend for Laczynski. He is currently in the Top 50 in NCAA scoring with seven points (1 G, 6 A). The leader is currently Jack Dugan of Providence with 14 points in six games.

Noah Cates (LW), University of Minnesota-Duluth
2017 5th Round Pick, 137th overall

  • 10/25 – 1 assist, 2 shots, 0 for 1 FOW
  • 10/26 – 2 shots, 2 PIM/

Cates with a quiet week bringing his season totals to three points (2 G, 1 A) in four games.

Bryce Brodzinski (RW), University of Minnesota
2019 7th Round Pick, 196th overall

  • 10/25 – 1 shot, 0 for 1 FOW
  • 10/26 – 3 shots/

Scoreless in his last three games, Brodzinski has one assist in his first six collegiate games.

Gavin Hain (C), University of North Dakota
2018 6th Round Pick, 174th overall

No word on why Hain was scratched. The sophomore has two assists in five games this season.

Cam York (D), University of Michigan
2019 1st Round Pick, 14th overall

York FINALLY makes it back to the lineup after sitting out a few games due to an injury. The freshman has three assists in his first three collegiate games.

Wyatt Kalynuk (D), University of Wisconsin
2017 7th Round Pick, 196th overall

  • 10/25 – 3 shots, 2 PIM
  • 10/26 – 1 assist, 7 shots/

You’d think playing with Cole Caulfield and Alex Turcotte would translate into more points than Kalynuk has been getting, though six points (all assists) in six games isn’t too shabby either.

Ronnie Attard (D), Western Michigan University
2019 3rd Round Pick, 72nd overall

Attard not exactly lighting it up his freshman year. He has just one point (a goal) in his first six games.

Jack St. Ivanny (D), Yale University
2018 4th Round Pick, 112nd overall

Yale’s season begins on November 1st.
