Shift by Shift: What we learned watching Alex Bump

We watched every shift of Alex Bump from a recent Western Michigan game and this is what we learned about the Flyers prospect.

Philadelphia Flyers prospect Alex Bump is having a very good time this season. The 21-year-old left winger has been lighting up the score sheet for Western Michigan and is on his way to the NCAA tournament this week.

But before he potentially earns a national championship with his team and then (potentially but likely) signs his entry-level contract with the Flyers, we decided to watch some tape.

Kyle hit the video room and clipped together all of Bump’s shifts from a recent game of his for the Broncos (as well as some highlights) and Ryan Gilbert joined to watch and break it all down. Watch it now up on our YouTube:

So, what did we learn? We know just from those stat sheets alone that Bump likes to shoot the puck. Maybe even “like” is too light of a word. He adores to shoot the puck and is generally the end of every sequence in the offensive zone.

Bump also certainly likes to be on the forecheck and is not afraid to use his body to get the puck back. An absolute hound in the offensive zone, but Kyle explains it much better in the video itself.

Overall, there are things to love about Bump and things that he will need to work on to take his game to the professional level. Maybe a little bit more puck protection and not always having to be the end of a sequence but being a distributor and creator of plays instead, would be a nice touch in the Flyers’ prospect pool.

There’s certainly no lack of size or physicality, and his skating is decent enough that it shouldn’t hinder his offense. But it will be interesting to see where he goes from here in the coming years. Bump has done all he can in college and especially for a hot-and-cold program like Western Michigan. Now, he’s going to move to the AHL’s Lehigh Valley Phantoms and even make his NHL debut before the year of 2025 ends.

Lots to look forward to when it comes to this dude.
